Thirty days hath November...well, I'm taking liberties with this rhyme. But, I'd be happier if 60 days hath November, giving me a head start on the chaos that we call the holidays! Could it be that Thanksgiving is my favorite of all the Fall holidays? Unlike Halloween, there is no commitment to a costume; comfy and casual are always in style at Thanksgiving. Why do turtlenecks and turkey just seem to go together?
No calendar countdowns, stress of lists, or planning of gifts. This is the welcome calm before the seasonal storm. I treasure the traditions of this time-honored autumn feast: family, friends, a well-dressed table with Fall foliage, tapers so tall they all but touch the ceiling, heirloom silver, cut crystal, and piles of porcelain awaiting the lovingly prepared bird.
Dark meat, please, and a hefty helping of mashed potatoes! (Truth be told, I've never met a potato I didn't like.) I find Thanksgiving preparation as pleasurable as the event. Under my grandmother's watchful eye, I perfected my table-setting skills as a little boy. Is it wrong to embrace the traditions of the past in these modern times when we all seem ruled by technology? I must admit, I'm addicted to digital devices—yet I crave conversation that's uninterrupted by them.
This Thanksgiving I'm not only thankful for the past and appreciative of the present, I eagerly look forward to the future, my family, my friends, and knowing what side of the plate to place the forks! Without tradition, how can we make memories that live on? I'm turning off in order to tune in. There will be no phones, no tablets—just people, pleasantries, and enjoying Thanksgiving the old-fashioned way. So when I reboot on Friday, I'll be rested and ready to begin preparations for the inevitable upcoming chaos.
From my table to yours and from all of us at Neiman Marcus, here's to a very Happy Thanksgiving!
