About Pierre Balmain:
At the center of couture's lavish post-war revival was the house of Balmain. After a brief stint studying architecture, a practice that would inform his later designs, Pierre Balmain worked for designer Edward Molyneux before founding his eponymous label in 1945. Known for its facility with tailored separates and opulent eveningwear alike, the haute Parisian label was a favorite among starlets like Marlene Dietrich, Katharine Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, and Sophia Loren. Today, Balmain's elegant aesthetic has evolved into a tougher, more glamorous version of the French sophisticate. Under the creative direction of Christophe Decarnin, Balmain turned out extravagant, rocker-chic pieces that are synonymous with the label today. Olivier Rousteing was named creative director in 2011.
