The Sutras According to DVF and H.Stern

DVF

Diane von Fursternberg and H.Stern have a few choice words for you. Since they partnered up on a fine jewelry line in 2004, they’ve produced instant classics, often identifiable by chunky chain links and rock crystal quartzes. Their latest eight-piece collection, called Sutras, was inspired by Jaipur, India and features verbiage.

“This new collection embodies the power of words and the power of gold,” says Diane von Furstenberg.

Zegna’s Zero Weight Is Your Gain

Zegna

Zero Weight in Ermenegildo Zegna's Spring 2011 show

Often, when designers strive for “fabric innovation” the results can be unnatural and, well, sweaty. But not so with Ermenegildo Zegna, which has been improving and refining wool for over a century. Zegna’s new Zero Weight is an incredibly light construction for jackets and suits, tailored with Trofeo 600 fabric weighing only 145 grams per meter. For comparison, average spring/summer lightweight suits or sportcoats weigh in around 230 to 250 grams. Trofeo 600, a blend of Merino wool and ultra-fine silk, is closer to a shirt weight. Shop Ermenegildo Zegna.

Balenciaga and Spain and San Francisco

Balenciaga“Balenciaga and Spain” has opened in San Francisco’s de Young Museum. The exhibit features 120 haute couture garments, hats, and headdresses designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895–1972) and illuminates his references to Spanish art, bullfighting, dance, regional costume, and the pageantry of the royal court and religious ceremonies. The exhibition originated in 2010 at the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute in New York. It was conceived by Oscar de la Renta, who began his career in fashion working at Balenciaga’s Madrid couture house in the 1950s. De la Renta invited Hamish Bowles, European editor-at-large of Vogue, to curate it, and Bowles included many pieces from his personal collection.

Neiman Marcus is a lead sponsor of the de Young exhibition, which runs through July 4.

La Mer Radiant Serum

La Mer

La Mer Radiant Serum launched in February and immediately joined the running for a Neiman Marcus Beauty Award. The ultra-light gel serum boosts skin’s ability to reflect light. How?

-Corrects discoloration.

-Smooths away dull surface cells that obscure light.

-Purifies and refines pores.

-Firms and plumps.

“One of the key ingredients in the Radiant Serum is Brightening Ferment which is made of 3 types of algae—red, blue and green algae. It helps reduce the appearance of dark spots by gradually breaking up the discolored spot and preventing new spots from forming,” said Tracy Ganser, manager of Beauty Live, the team of beauty advisors who live chat via NeimanMarcus.com.

Nancy Gonzalez Sees Red As Neutral

Colombian designer Nancy Gonzalez swung into Neiman Marcus’ San Francisco store to meet  fans of her super-luxe bags and showcase her newest tropics-inspired collection. She talked totes, style icons (you’d be surprised), and her goals of branching into shoes and home decor in the near future.

NM: Tell us about the Spring 2011 collection that you’re showing here today.

NG: First off, I really don’t believe in collections. It’s more about a permanent collection that I add more colors and styles to, because I believe in permanent things that you can wear forever. I love real things and natural things, and I was thinking about tropical areas and how color is so infinite. I live in Colombia around the fruit, the birds, the orchids. There are so many colors that I want to use all of them. But for this season, I did a lot of turquoises and pinks. Red is always there. I think of it as a neutral color. In terms of skins I used a lot of crocodile, but in different finishes: matte, shiny, pearlized, and metallic.
