NM @ Marfa

You may remember the desolate Marfa landscape from the movie Giant, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean. Or from There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men. Or perhaps you remember the “insider’s” trip to Marfa, starting at $9,500 per couple, in the 2010 Neiman Marcus Christmas Book. Thanks to the late artist Donald Judd and his Chinati Foundation, the little far West Texas town of Marfa, with a population of 2,121, is considered one of the world’s most important destinations for large-scale contemporary art.  This art oasis, nestled high in the Chihuahuan Desert, hosts artists, galleries and cuisine to impress the discerning traveler looking for something off the beaten path.

California Dreamin’ With Derek Lam

This week, Derek Lam went back to his Cali roots. Lam, who was born and raised in San Francisco, hosted an intimate Pre-Fall and Fall 2011 presentation at Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills. Dressed in an immaculate white button down and crisp dark jeans, the articulate designer narrated each look that hit the runway. He even stuck around to help the event attendees, including a few mother and daughter pairs, pick out versatile pieces for their wardrobes.

NM: Who are the women who inspire you?

DL: For me, it’s all about a sense of informality but still wanting to look stylish. I think women who share that sensibility are the women I’m trying to reach—and have reached—with my line. What’s amazing when I come to these trunk shows is that it reaffirms who I have in mind when I design. It’s these women who love fashion but they really also need to get on with their lives. By that I mean, they have kids, and they have work. And yet, they don’t want to give up a sense of their personality and that love for fashion. For me, it’s about balancing all those nuances.

Theodora & Callum: Globetrotting In Style

Theodora & Callum launched this spring, right on time for a season defined by bohemian-globetrotter romance. The accessory line, featuring scarves, jewelry, shoes and bags, are all inspired by the founders’ travels—to Morocco, Bali, Turkey, India and the Mediterranean—as well as the late Sixties and early Seventies European jet set. You’ve probably already seen one the signature ethnic-print scarves on this or that actress, photographed striding through an airport or drying off on a beach. The shoes and bags, manufactured by Stuart Weitzman, also incorporate prints and patterns. Designers Stefani Greenfield, who co-founded the Scoop NYC boutiques, and entertainment executive Desiree Gruber, co-creator of Project Runway, named the line after their children. Greenfield spoke to NMdaily ahead of some upcoming visits to Neiman Marcus.

How to Get Kate Somerville’s Skin

Kate Somerville

Kate Somerville

Skincare guru Kate Somerville spent a couple hours chatting online with Neiman Marcus customers today. What did we learn? Lots. For starters, her daily regimen:

“I have really thin, dry skin, and more issues with pigment than texture. So I start with Gentle Daily Wash. (I also use it as a shaving cream.) About three times a week I’ll substitute ExfoliKate Gentle as my morning cleanser.”

“For daytime I use HydraKate Line Release serum, Total Vitamin Antioxidant Complex and Deep Tissue Repair as my daily moisturizer. Then CytoCell Dark Circle Corrective Eye Cream.”

Toms Shoes Get Crafty

A series of “Style Your Sole” events with Toms Shoes kicked off at NorthPark Dallas last weekend. Artists visited the store to customize canvas Toms according to kids’ wishes. It was not only a fun activity for kids, but also an opportunity for them to learn about the worldwide need for children’s shoes and what Toms is doing to help. (For every pair of shoes sold, Toms donates a pair to a child in need.)
