Summer Essential: Waterproof Eyes

ysl

Summer is weeks away, calling for a great waterproof mascara and eyeliner.  A favorite of beauty editors and makeup artists, YSL Waterproof Mascara Singulier uses a flexible polymer that creates volume, curl, and length that won’t budge and comes in five shades ranging from Vibrant Black to Vibrant Violet.

While colors like violet or plum sound daunting, the deep colors actually give the impression of a soft black until the movement of the head or a change of light reveals a wash of color.

B.D. Baggies Make a Comeback

B.D. Baggies

In 1986 a line of shirts hit the market, designed with one simple tactic in mind: give real guys shirts that are so soft, they feel as if they’ve been passed down through multiple generations. Their packaging was unique, as the shirts came in small laundry bags. The brand soared. But in the mid 1990s, B.D. Baggies hit a slump. To shake things up, the new parent company WP Lavori in Corso, the Bologna, Italy based company that revived Woolrich, recently brought on designer Dave Mullen, who is acclaimed for designing Save Khaki.

Summer Essential: Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder

guerlain terracottaNothing gives that healthy summer glow like a good bronzer. Guerlain’s Terracotta Bronzing Powder, voted InStyle magazine’s Best Bronzer for seven years running, is a makeup-bag must. Guerlain developed the first bronzer in France in the 1930s and still does it best.  Terracotta doesn’t have the unnatural shimmer of other bronzers and comes in nine different shades for every skin tone. It complements even the fairest complexions without looking muddy or orange.

Using the Guerlain kabuki brush, dust the face along the forehead, hairline, hollow of the cheeks, nose, chin, and neck for a sun kissed glow. Or for a quick fix, use a spritz of Guerlain’s Terracotta Bronzing Powder Mist. A favorite of Guerlain’s celebrity makeup artist Marcus Monson, Terracotta Bronzing Powder Mist is a critical part of his four-minute makeup routine for women on the go. A swipe of Guerlain’s Precious Light Illuminator around the eyes (which functions as a concealer and eyeshadow base too), Guerlain’s Recourbant waterproof curling mascara, Rouge Automatique lip color, and a spritz of Terracotta Bronzing Powder Mist with SPF 10 and you’re ready to go.

Southern Charm and the City

Billy Reid

Designer Billy Reid

With Southern tradition and heritage in his soul, Billy Reid designs men’s clothes that encapsulate genteel yet sturdily constructed goods. His materials of choice—such as the thick corduroys, chunky wools, and carefully constructed cottons seen in his Fall/Winter 2011 presentation—help translate his point of view to men who care about the way they look, but most importantly, how they feel. The approach has as much appeal in New York City as in Florence, Alabama, where Reid is based.

For Summer, he’s made the approach to getting dressed in the morning quite simple: chambray blazers, crisp oxfords with subtle detailing, polo shirts and an assortment of lightweight nautical inspired V-neck sweaters.

L’Amour Fou: Remembering Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent, 1961 rue Spontini. Photo by Pierre Boulat. From Pierre Thoretton’s L’AMOUR FOU, a Sundance Selects release.

As the title L’Amour Fou suggests, Pierre Thoretton’s film about the late great Yves Saint Laurent and his business and life partner Pierre Bergé isn’t merely a movie about fashion, but a film about an intense love affair that spanned over four decades and had fashion as its backdrop.

After setting out to make a documentary about the record-breaking $477 million sale of the couple’s art and furniture collection at Christie’s, the first-time director Thoretton found that the real story was the men behind the collection and the deep affection and connection they shared.

Table of the Elements

mottahedeh rodarte

The mix of Mottahedeh Imperial Blue and wood grain evokes Rodarte Spring/Summer 2011.

The biggest trend in dinnerware is having fun with it, says Mottahedeh president Wendy Kvalheim, on a recent visit to Neiman Marcus in Dallas. Mottahedeh dinnerware stands for history and heritage, but that doesn’t have to translate to stuffy table settings. Try using ornate patterns for everyday, mixing and matching patterns and texture in fun combinations, and finding creative new uses for dishes, says Kvalheim. A pot de crème can hold a candle, or a crescent bone dish can become an interesting salad plate.

Happy Hour: Limoncellato

limoncellatoThis is the perfect almost-summer drink to remind you of the simple pleasures that await.

1 oz. black cherry rum

1/2 oz. Il Tramonto Limoncello

Fill a pint glass with ice. In a separate shaker, combine the first 4 ingredients, cap and shake for 5 seconds. Strain into your pint glass. Top with Luccio Moscato d’Asti. Garnish with a lemon twist and a straw. Go sip by the pool.

Cream Blush According to La Prairie’s Raychel Wade

la prairie

La Prairie Bouquet de Jardin

La Prairie is best known as one of the most prestigious skincare brands in the world, but it also has created beautiful makeup since 2003. La Prairie color ambassador (brand-speak for national makeup artist) Raychel Wade was dispatched to Houston and Dallas to present Bouquet de Jardin, the peony-inspired makeup collection she developed for Summer 2011. Peony is most evident in the Cellular Radiance Cream Blush, now available in two new shades.

“Cream blush is my all-time favorite product to have in my bag, and the brighter the better,” Wade declared. She gave us an impromptu lesson in cream-blush application.

Bugaboo + Missoni

The Bee

The Chameleon

The makers of Bugaboo strollers (already one of the most prestigious pieces of parental equipment out there) has gone and collaborated with Missoni to make them a badge of high fashion sense, too. In fact, the arty video that the two brands produced demonstrates how a deadly serious fashionista might work the collection, with no baby in sight. Realistic? You decide. What’s certain is this: Missoni’s color patterns give stylish parents yet another reason to covet the streamlined, Dutch strollers. Bugaboo + Missoni, available exclusively at Neiman Marcus in July, features two designs. A block print adorns the Bugaboo Cameleon sun canopy and bassinet apron; and Missoni’s signature zigzags decorate the Bugaboo Bee sun canopy. Each comes with a knitted Missoni baby blanket, which makes our old wubbies seem woefully unchic, in retrospect.
