Happy Hour: Southern Lady

Bourbon is a great Southern elixir.  Mix in the region’s solutions to a hot summer afternoon, and there’s nothing finer.

Ingredients:

Ice to fill glass

1 1/2 oz. Maker’s Mark

2 oz. fresh lemonade

2 oz. Dammann Freres iced tea

1 oz.  peach marmalade

Add ingredients into mixing glass, “roll” into another mixing glass 2 to 3 times and pour into a large wine glass. You may need to add a few more ice cubes.  Garnish with peach slice and mint sprig.

Cheers, darlin’.

SoulCycle: Fashionista Fitness Craze

soulcycle

SoulCycle instructor Stacey Griffith

You can see them congregating over coconut water at Juice Generation on Manhattan’s West 72nd street or waiting on line at Whole Foods in Tribeca, drenched in equal parts sweat and neon-colored wicking fabrics. They’re the SoulCycle groupies who spin on average four times a week and travel across the city just to make Laurie Cole’s 9:30 a.m. class or Janet Fitzgerald’s grueling one-hour Sunday morning class. SoulCycle, like its competitor FlyWheel, has become a fitness phenomenon. A single class costs $32 to $36—steep, even by New York standards. But both men and women swear by the payoff of 45 minutes spent sweating and pedaling by candlelight in SoulCycle’s high-tech studios: endorphin highs and svelte silhouettes. And they’ve inspired new activewear trends: neon-colored, camouflage-patterned Nike biking shorts topped by burn-out T-shirts with empowering slogans splashed across the chest, skull-patterned scarves worn as headbands, and Mylar tote bags.

Alejandro Ingelmo, Fall 2011

Alejandro Ingelmo’s youthful rebellion lasted until age 32 (five years ago,) when he gave into family tradition and launched a shoe collection. He is the fourth generation of his family to make shoes.

“My great-grandfather was the neighborhood cobbler in his town, in Salamanca, Spain,” says Ingelmo. “His son, my grandfather, moved to Cuba and opened a small factory, which grew into a big brand, but after Fidel Castro came into power it was done. So half my family moved back to Spain and the other half to the U.S. My grandfather ended up shining shoes. So my father, knowing what he knew, did real estate. But then he decided to start making shoes.”
