Models Shine at David Yurman’s Rooftop Soiree
The weather gods were smiling last night upon David Yurman’s annual summer rooftop party, where guests mingled and danced under a purple sky and atop the brand’s Tribeca headquarters in New York.
“Every year we get a great night for this party and it’s something I love to do,” said Yurman. “Everyone is so busy all summer, it’s nice to get a chance to take time to relax with friends. I was working up until five minutes before I came up here.”
Conversation With: Barker Black’s Derrick Miller
Derrick Miller, creative director of Barker Black Ltd., comes by his innate design sense initially from his father, Frank Miller, an artist and clotheshorse obsessed with custom English shoes and clothing. He enrolled at Parson’s School of Design in Paris, where he fell in love with photography – which helped him evolve his progressive eye for style and detail. He landed spots on the mastheads at GQ and Nylon, but he was most interested in the process involved in clothing design. So he did what anyone would do if they had the nerve. He contacted Mr. Ralph Lauren personally, arrived for their appointment in a $19.99 handmade suit from the Salvation Army, and Miller was hired on the spot to work on the top-of-the-line Purple Label. Shortly thereafter, Miller was approached with a pivotal opportunity. Barker Shoes, a 125-year-old shoe company from Northampton, England was looking for someone to relaunch their brand with a more modern flair.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen on Elizabeth and James
Sisters Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen arrived stealthily in Dallas on Tuesday to promote their 4-year-old contemporary label, Elizabeth and James. Neiman Marcus Fashion Director Ken Downing helped them present the Fall collection — including both the core collection and the jeans wear spinoff, Textile — in an intimate, invitation-only setting at the NorthPark Neiman Marcus.
NMdaily: The last time I saw you together, we spoke a lot about the masculine/feminine balance of Elizabeth and James. Do you still see the brand that way?
Ashley Olsen: We definitely still see that, and we’ve expanded it.
Lalique’s Carnet de Voyage
Here’s a gift idea for the Leo who has everything. Lalique’s new Fall collection, Carnet de Voyage, glows like an African sunset. This exclusive collection takes us on an adventurous reverie inspired by Rene Lalique’s passion for traveling. His outstanding talent carried him to far-flung commissions. He decorated the famous Normandy ocean liner and the mythical Orient Express. Today, the Carnet de Voyage tells its story through nature-inspired crystal, inhabited by proud felines and exotic flora. The collection’s amber hue adds lightness to the weighty masterpieces, bringing life to the crystal while illuminating with changing reflections. The heritage of Lalique is easily recognizable in the hand-finished forms and intricately sculptured, figurative detailing. Shop Lalique’s Carnet de Voyage collection exclusively at Neiman Marcus.
My Summer Vacation: Alexis Bittar
This is the first installment of a series on the vacation destinations and habits of our fashionable friends.
Brooklyn-based jewelry designer Alexis Bittar is bound for the Eternal City.
“I’m taking a much-needed vacation to Rome, with my boyfriend. I plan to eat a lot of homemade pasta, from local restaurants, and put on 20 pounds. I will also enjoy taking naps and a drive by the Coliseum. We will stay at the St. Regis.”
Conversation With: Cynthia Steffe Designer Shaun Kearney
In 2007, after nearly two decades in the biz, Cynthia Steffe passed the reins of her contemporary women’s wear company to Shaun Kearney, a British designer trained both in London and New York at Donna Karan, Laundry, Max Mara and Randolph Duke. Since joining Cynthia Steffe, Kearney, who serves as the brand’s executive vice president of design and creative director, has worked to maintain the label’s signature femininity and quality, while modernizing the brand with a look that is sophisticated with a fun twist.
Guerlain’s 60 Second Makeover
Marcus Monson, national makeup artist for Guerlain, shows us how to get a radiant summer face in just 60 seconds.
Model Citizen: Jacquelyn Jablonski
Jacquelyn Jablonski’s life is as versatile as her look. Fresh off a Paris couture stint – which included turns on the runways of Chanel, Valentino, Dior and Giambattista Valli – the 19-year-old current face of Hermès is home, in New Jersey, cooking shrimp and grilled pineapple for her family. That sounds about right for the face of all-American brand Tommy Hilfiger, which she also is. Since signing with Supreme Management in 2010 she has appeared in a slew of editorials, working with photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino and Juergen Teller. The model with the sporty good looks talked with us about life along the Jersey Shore.
