Pacific Standard Time Takes Over California

The unprecedented Southern California initiative known as Pacific Standard Time (PST) was officially inaugurated this month at the Getty Center.  An extravagant sound and light show worthy of the Acropolis splashed over the J. Paul Getty Museum’s architecture to begin the festivities.  Viewed from the arrival plaza, it was spectacular indeed.   Guests were then invited for a first view of the exhibition, “Crosscurrents in L.A. Painting and Sculpture 1950-1970”.

The Getty Museum is among over 60 institutions across Southern California that is collaborating to celebrate and to examine the Los Angeles art scene between 1945-1980.   The initiative began modestly in 2001 when the Getty Research Institute launched an oral history project to preserve the recollections of artists, gallery owners and other key players of the period.  Subsequently the project grew, gathered momentum and eventually exploded in scope, content and ambition.  The Getty Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the J. Paul Getty Trust, funded the effort through $10 million worth of grants.  In addition to encouraging fresh scholarship, the goals are to raise the profile of Los Angeles as a global visual arts destination and to attract a broad new audience to venues throughout the region.  Individual artists’ careers and their contributions will inevitably be re-evaluated upward, and a rewrite of the region’s historical significance will ensue.

Rag & Bone Comes Full Circle With Denim

Rag & Bone's Marcus Wainwright and David Neville

When you think of the fashion industry you typically don’t think of Kentucky. But in 2002 that’s exactly where British transplants Marcus Wainwright and David Neville headed to jumpstart their careers as fashion designers.

“We ended up tracking down a factory in Kentucky that had been making jeans for 50 years,” Wainwright says of the pilgrimage to the Bluegrass State to manufacture a pair of rigid men’s jeans. “They made the first small run of jeans we delivered to three stores at the end of 2004. That was our first really breakthrough moment — seeing these incredibly skilled women sewing a jean we had sketched and designed.”

Cookie Johnson Hugs the Curves

Cookie Johnson

The stylish Cookie Johnson stopped by the New York fashion office of Neiman Marcus to show the latest threads from CJ by Cookie Johnson to buyer Debi Rodenmayer and chat with NMdaily. The collection started with jeans for curvy women, and has extended to leggings and tops.

NMdaily: What’s new for Fall in CJ by Cookie Johnson?

Cookie Johnson: Fall is one of the most diverse collections we’ve done so far. There is so much newness and novelty. Most interesting this season has been all the colored jeans…red, plum, merlot, fuchsia, cobalt. It is all about stepping out of your safety zone and having some fun. The new coated jeans that look like leather and the print jeans like leopard, python and zebra also make Fall interesting. And we expanded our exploration of the legging, the skinny, the cigarette with lots of new alternative fabrics, shapes and details.

Elie Tahari touched down in Dallas for a fashion presentation hosted by Neiman Marcus Fashion Director Ken Downing. Dolled-up ladies filled every seat in the house and then some to espy Elie’s head-to-toe ensembles for Fall and preview his fresh-off-the-runway looks for spring. Post-show, the racks backstage were rolled out onto the floor and it was time to shop (the dressing room line in the store’s new Elie Tahari department was 15 deep!). Elie chatted with his fashionable fans as Ken proceeded to layer up the crowd in the designer’s Bordeaux-colored scarves and leather dresses.

Zodiac’s Fall 2011 Wine List

Wine Chateau Greysac

Chateau Greysac Médoc Cru, Bordeaux

This Fall is truly all about Bordeaux.  The swipe of a deep lacquer lipstick or the sip of a full-bodied wine will make you shine.  The Zodiac restaurants of Neiman Marcus debut a new wine list, curated by resident “wine guy” Frank Zack, and we can’t help but boast the full bodied, Bordeaux – Chateau Greysac Médoc Cru.  This classic red is indeed one of great aromatic finesse, combined with precise, sumptuous fruit flavors that develop in elegance and complexity over time.  Enjoy deep ruby-garnet, fresh red berries, mingled with notes of cedar and spice, lovely red fruits, with full rich flavors balanced by silky tannins.  Located in the Medoc region of Bordeaux, Chateau Greysac lies to the north of Saint Estephe, near the towns of By and Begadan.  Its vineyards are comprised of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.  The average age of the vines is 25 years.

Span the French countryside and you will find a plethora of other savory sensations – Louis Jadot Couvent des Jacobins’ Pinot Noir, Burgundy (exclusively ours) or opt for the Nicolas Feuillatte Brut.  Move stateside for a glass of Stag’s Leap Artemis Cabernet or Laguna Ranch Vineyards Chardonnay.

Daphne Guinness Exhibit at The Museum at FIT

Blogs like The Coveteur have made peeking inside the closets of fashion insiders de rigueur. But the Daphne Guinness exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Museum at FIT in New York feels different. The exhibit isn’t just a voyeuristic glimpse into the exquisitely eccentric wardrobe of a fashion darling. It elevates the woman behind the clothes to the status of artist’s muse, art collector and co-creator.

First, a little background on the sylph-like woman behind the striped chignon and never sensible, always vertiginous shoes. Daphne Guinness is the daughter of brewery heir Jonathan Guinness. As the granddaughter of Diana Mitford, one of the infamous and stylish Mitford sisters, Guinness has fashion in her blood. In fact, over the last decade, she has made a name for herself as a serious couture connoisseur, keeping her extensive fashion collection catalogued in a computer database. Guinness has been called a muse by the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and the late, great Alexander McQueen.

The minute you walk into the exhibit, it’s clear why fashion designers find Guinness so inspiring. Her taste is impeccable. And completely her own.

Conversation With: Thakoon Panichgul

Thakoon Panchigul

Thakoon, Fall 2011

Juxtaposing 18th Century French court silhouettes with African-inspired prints and vivid Nouveau Realist color resulted in one of the most covetable collections this Fall. Think modern colorblocking combinations – Yves Klein blue and crimson red.  Sporty details. Yet always appropriate for a lady, even a First Lady, as Michelle Obama has demonstrated over the years.

Seven years after conceiving his ready-to-wear collection, designer Thakoon Panichgul has a cult following and three separate collections – Thakoon, Addition and Carbon Copy.  Known for his modern reinventions, bold colorful prints and ethnic references, which seems only natural for someone who was born in Thailand, raised in Omaha and now New York-based.  I caught up with Panchigul just before he debuted his Spring 2012 collection in New York.
