Stephen Webster: Murder He Wrote

Murder She Wrote

Pieces from Webster's Murder She Wrote Collection

When jewelry designer Stephen Webster hosts a party, you are in for an experience.  The good-humored Brit’s most recent bauble bazaar? A touring Murder Mystery Party at select Neiman Marcus stores, in honor of his stunning new collection, Murder She Wrote.

After the crime scene was cleared at Dallas NorthPark, Webster sat down with NMdaily to chat about his latest storytelling series and the secret to convincing men to wear jewelry.

Ippolita’s Installations

Ippolita

The designer, Ippolita.

In Ippolita’s world, bangles, rings and necklaces – both gold and silver, wide and narrow, ornate and subdued – stack and layer in unison. Her harmonizing method of making contrasting designs both coexist and compliment is an art form that emanates from her background as a sculptor.

“All the time I have where I’m not working, I’m sculpting,” says Ippolita, who has committed her entire life to creating art and supporting art. “When I was nine, Henry Moore had a retrospective at Forte Belvedere in Florence. Seeing so many giant yet simple sculptures struck a chord.”

Jean Paul Gaultier at the Dallas Museum of Art

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk

“Men can cry as woman can fight,” says Jean Paul Gaultier, in a statement that describes his reinterpretation of society’s boundaries between sexes, but could also serve as a declaration for what makes his work so special — the conviction to bend social norms and reveal what’s typically concealed.

This morning the Dallas Museum of Art previewed “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,” the first exhibition ever devoted to the celebrated French couturier. This international exhibition (opening to the public this Sunday, November 13,) was conceived, produced and organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Maison Jean Paul Gaultier. It now makes its U.S. debut.

Konstantino: Greece is the Word

Konstantino

Turquoise bracelets from Konstantino's Astritis collection

When Konstantino makes an appearance at Neiman Marcus, the internationally acclaimed jewelry designer stands side by side with the sales associates.

“I know how the sales people feel, how their feet feel and how their heart feels when they’ve had a tough day,” says Konstantino, who began his career in the jewelry industry as a sales person in 1982. “So when I come in the store, I work next to them, together.”

Linda Bergman: Mother of Pearls

Linda Bergman

Bergman's elastic pearl bracelets

Fifteen years ago Linda Bergman went from beautifying beach houses in Newport Beach, California to decorating women with her eponymous jewelry collection. In the beginning Bergman’s penchant for pearls was strictly personal, until an Orange County boutique she frequented inquired about her distinctive adornments. Bergman said the seaside shop’s interest in a handful of her homespun strands was flattering, but selling the store five necklaces and a few pairs of earrings was no cause to quit her day job.

“I did this small collection for them, then one day the Neiman Marcus buyers stopped in,” Bergman says wide-eyed as if the decade-ago, big break was just yesterday. ”The buyers contacted me and said we need this in the stores, how many can you do?”

Cynthia Bach: Crown Lady and Then Some

Cynthia Bach’s intricately detailed jewelry is a favorite among Hollywood royalty. Cate Blanchett donned Bach’s India-inspired body jewelry at the Oscars and Salma Hayek wore a diamond and platinum “Tiara” bracelet, as a hair ornament, to the White House Correspondent’s Association dinner during the Clinton Administration.  The bracelet now resides permanently in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.  ”Royalty” seems like a natural fit, considering Bach’s signature is a crown.  She received the nickname “Crown Lady” in the Eighties.

Alexis Bittar: Thoughts on Design, Growth and Copycats

Alexis Bittar

Last week Brooklyn-born and -based jewelry designer Alexis Bittar came to the Neiman Marcus in Willow Bend, Texas. His simple tattoo that wraps around his ring finger immediately catches the eye. This ironic, subtle statement reflects the value he places on creative, outside-the-box thinking, which is clear in his attention to detail and original statement-driven designs.  No wonder, Bittar’s cool-girl cult continues to grow, season after season.

Dominique Cohen: Jewelry First

Jewelry Designer Dominique Cohen

Dominique Cohen has a reversed way of getting ready. The jewelry designer gets dressed in jewelry first, then she adds her outfit’s finishing touches with clothing.

“Jewelry is the wardrobe and clothing is the accessory,” Cohen says of her brand’s philosophy.

The routine makes sense, considering many invest more in a piece of jewelry than an article of clothing.

“We are very focused on curating our clients’ wardrobes of jewelry and helping them select pieces that are going to work back with what they already purchased and work forward for them,” she says.

Pearls and colored stones mingle in India-inspired pieces.

At their stylish atelier in Manhattan’s Garment District, Jose Barrera and his daughter Larisa Barrera oversee a group of skilled artisans as they hand make each Jose & Maria Barrera piece for the Neiman Marcus holiday collection. (Neiman Marcus began buying the line 28 years ago.) Meanwhile, matriarch Maria Barrera tends to business matters. The family’s atelier is an inspired, and inspiring, treasure trove of ethnic art, collected over 30 years. African, Chinese, Indonesian and Mexican artifacts and folk art line the walls from floor to ceiling, creating a feeling of warmth, welcome and fantasy. A charmed space.
