Street Style: Paris Men’s Fashion Week F/W 2012

Paris was rainy and gray as the men’s Fall/Winter 2012 collections paraded through, and the editors and buyers seemed to take a more casual approach to dressing—wrapping themselves in stripes, plaids and camouflage. They mixed great outwear and workwear with chinos and cardigans, keeping it all classic.

Estée Lauder’s Tom Pecheux Introduces the New Neutral

I visited with Estée Lauder creative director Tom Pecheux, one of the world’s premier makeup artists, backstage at Derek Lam‘s Spring 2012 show. One of the elements that made Derek’s models look so fresh on the runway was Tom’s application of subtle yellow. Yes, yellow! As you know, I’ve deemed yellow The New Neutral for Spring 2012, and Tom showed us how a little mellow yellow can even be worn to update your pretty face. I greatly admire Tom’s way of thinking. Keep fashion and beauty moving forward!

During the Up Close: Estée Lauder event, now through Feb. 2, there is a gift with any $70 Estée Lauder purchase.

Project Runway All Stars – Week 3, the Miss Piggy Episode

This recap contains spoilers! Stop reading if you don’t want to know who won or lost. This week the designers are issued a challenge to design a cocktail dress that Miss Piggy can wear during promotion of “The Muppets.” This vies for the most surreal episode in the history of the franchise, as everyone must uphold the notion that Miss Piggy is a living “person” with her own desires and opinions. This suspension of disbelief punctures any pretense that the show’s mission is anything other than entertainment. Oh well! Piggy’s diva quips and priceless reaction shots certainly entertain. So does squabbling over the Neiman Marcus Accessory Wall. Expect more of that. And the designs? When the top and bottom designs are selected, you don’t know which are which, because they’re all so cartoonish. Gordana’s diaphanous chemise gets her eliminated because, if anything, it is too subtle, too pretty. Host Angela Lindvall comes right out and admits that Rami’s clowny, flouncy get-up would normally be ridiculous, but under the circumstances, it is right on. Michael wins the day with a loopy, structured minidress and matching headpiece. The lesson here is that you can never forget who your client is. And also, “It’s never too late to follow your dreams,” as Gordana says on her way out.

Best Moisturizer

Kate Somerville skincare. It’s hard to pick just one favorite from her line; everything I’ve tried does exactly what it promises. But if I had to choose, I’d say Deep Tissue Moisturizer — it’s given me the skin I didn’t appreciate when I was younger.

John Hardy Naga Collection Commemorates Year of the Dragon

The Lunar New Year on January 23 marks the return of the Year of the Dragon. Every twelve years this mythical monster reemerges as a zodiac sign, heralding a bright future full of energy and success for those born under it. Although the Gregorian calendar is used globally, the Chinese lunisolar calendar is used to determine holidays—not only by the Chinese but across much of Asia, including Bali, the home of John Hardy. So this month, John Hardy reissues the Naga Collection, featuring the fire-breathing beast. According to an ancient Balinese tale, the Naga dragon is a lover of the pearl and must dive from his volcano-top home to the sea to visit his love. Legend has it that upon his return, water cascades off his scales into the rice fields, resulting in a prosperous year. ”I like to think that the wearers of the Naga Collection will enjoy love, prosperity and luck,” says Guy Bedarida, John Hardy head designer and creative director.
