Pitti Uomo Report: Bold Color

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair in Florence is an essential market for retailers of European tailoring and luxury sportswear. The semiannual installation, which wound down today, raised the curtain on the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. It was also ground zero for men from all over the world, of all ages, to display their sartorial savoir faire. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein was on the scene for NMdaily.

Not that Italians need a moderate winter as an excuse to wear color, but they’re having one. I saw bright blues, shades of pink and orange, and of course the signature red. With the spring-like temperatures, I saw quite a few accessories with pops of color as well. See you in Milan…

Pitti Uomo Report: Double Breasted Jackets

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair in Florence is an essential market for retailers of European tailoring and luxury sportswear. The semiannual installation, happening this week, raises the curtain on the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. It is also ground zero for men from all over the world, of all ages, to display their sartorial savoir faire. These guys know the rules well enough to break them, to outstanding effect. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein is on the scene for NMdaily.

The Double Breasted is standard dress code for Pitti Uomo, and this season was no different. They wore double breasted suits as well as blazers worn more casually, paired with khakis, cargos, (yellow) cords and white jeans. Winter whites work exceptionally well in Firenze.

Project Runway All Stars – Week 2 Recap

This recap contains spoilers! Stop reading if you don’t want to know who won or lost. In episode 2, Project Runway All Stars does an about-face from last week’s 99-cent challenge, and requires the designers to create gowns for “a night at the opera.” So it’s off to Mood, where Michael accuses April of copying his choice of red fabric before he stomps off and switches to black. Back in the workroom, April dunks her red fabric in a bucket of black dye. It’s worrisome, yes, but apparently not as worrisome as Kara’s lack of confidence. Everyone snags glittery clutches and stilettos from the Neiman Marcus Accessory Wall before hitting the runway. Rounding out the judges panel this week are Badgley Mischka‘s Mark Badgley and James Mischka, who know from evening gowns. April’s red/black ombré dress does end up in the bottom two, but it’s Sweet P’s folksy floral that gets the axe. Michael’s high-necked, low-backed, feathered, jeweled, draped jersey showstopper vies for the top spot with Austin’s “modest” black and gold lamé number, which is more appropriate for the opera, and thus, victorious.

Pitti Uomo Report: Dots

Today I saw lots of polka dots. Dotted scarves in cottons, silks & wools. In neckwear, I saw dots in both silk and knit. While we are talking about accessories, I also spotted (pardon the pun) pocket squares and socks and even a shirt. Whether you’re brave enough to wear a bold colored scarf or more of a traditional Churchill dot necktie, dots are classic!

Pitti Uomo Report: Bow Ties

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair in Florence is an essential market for retailers of European tailoring and luxury sportswear. The semiannual installation, happening this week, raises the curtain on the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. It is also ground zero for men from all over the world, of all ages, to display their sartorial savoir faire. These guys know the rules well enough to break them, to outstanding effect. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein is on the scene for NMdaily.
Tuesday, Day 1. On this lovely first day of Pitti Uomo, as the sun was shining and heavy scarves were not needed, bow ties were plentiful and worn every way: in silk, cotton and velvet; worn casually with tweeds, denim, or nylon tech outerwear; or with suits.

Meet Matthew Singer, Our New Men’s Fashion Director!

Matthew Singer

Men's Fashion Director Matthew Singer

Matthew Singer, the new men’s fashion director of Neiman Marcus Group, started this week!

He’ll be providing trend direction to the company’s men’s wear buyers, spanning men’s wear markets including Designer, Sportswear, Tailored Clothing, Contemporary, Furnishings, Men’s Accessories and Men’s Shoes. He’ll be based in New York, where he already lives. And since we love a good baptism by fire, he is already off to Europe, to represent NM and sibling store Bergdorf Goodman at the Pitti Uomo fair in Florence and the Fall/Winter runway shows in Milan and Paris. He’s a seasoned retailer, so he’s already made this journey about a dozen times.

What’s your packing strategy for this two-week trip? Key items?

Organization is key.  I lay everything out, put a few outfits together, and fill in the blanks.  A key item for me is a navy sport coat. I can get a lot of mileage out of one jacket, changing it up with a pocket square or tie.

What are your expectations and hopes for the shows?

For me, the shows never get old!  It always feels like it’s my first time. The lights go out, the music starts, and out comes the fashion. I always hope to pick up on trends and get inspired. The shows haven’t let me down yet.

What’s your favorite leg of the trip?

I can’t pick a favorite. Each city gets me excited—Pitti in Florence, runway in Milan, and boutiques in Paris.
