Seen On The Runway: Men’s Wear Influence

At New York Fashion Week designers expressed a sense of power with masculine shapes. Tailored suits? Check. Double-breasted coats? Check. Oxfords? Check. Come Fall, you’ll want to take part in this form of power dressing.  Click through the album to see how the designers interpret the trend.

Kareen Mallet, senior ready-to-wear director of Neiman Marcus, shares her perspective on each day of New York Fashion Week.

Today I’m wearing black lace skirt from Madison Marcus, white-black chiffon blouse from Valentino, white fox fur vest, Alexandre Birman boots, Goyard tote and Theory anorak.

7:45 am: At the office finishing up my trend presentation. Lots of good trends this week: lady polish with a vintage vibe, boy meets girl, and the athletica trend we saw for Spring still going strong (think baseball jacket and embellished sweatshirt), among others. Today is last day of New York Fashion Week. I only have two shows, but  lots of market appointments.

8:15 am: At Diane von Furstenberg headquarters in the Meatpacking District.

On The Runway at NYFW: Leather Pants

For Spring, designers introduced ladylike leather in pleated skirts and minimal tops that are suitable year-round.  At New York Fashion Week, designers aren’t shy about expressing their continued love for the sleek material. For Fall, the leather pant is popping up everywhere. Whether you put on a sleek leather legging or slouchy trouser, this is the hide to seek.

Runway Rewind: Tory Burch, Victoria Beckham, Tracy Reese

The Fall/Winter 2012 collections hit the runway for only a few minutes, but you can catch the action all season long on the Neiman Marcus YouTube Channel.

Tory Burch

New York City girl-about-town Tory Burch presented a prim and proper Fall 2012 collection filled with ladylike tweed suiting, peplums, and cropped plaid pants. The polished uptown girl behind the collection was inspired by a “prim girl who’s fallen under the spell of the wrong kind of guy” and the show’s set was designed to resemble a hotel – the preferred meeting place of the unsuspected couple.

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham marched a sophisticated sleek woman down her runway at the New York Public Library’s Astor Hall. Her signature sharp silhouettes featured utilitarian touches, like gold buttons and canvas, and sporty colorblocked collars.

Tracy Reese

Tracy Reese released an upbeat saturated-in-color collection down a runway anchored by a blown up inspiration board. “Colorful, confident attire for navigating the urban landscape,” the designer says, in the show’s program, was what her Fall 2012 looks were all about.

On the Runway at NYFW – Jackets

At New York Fashion Week, jackets become the topper of choice for designers. Come Fall, you’ll want to cover up with a masculine or sporty-inspired jacket. Military and men’s wear nods are reflected in the tailoring, color combinations (black and navy) and buttons.  The athletic influence is seen in distinct shapes, like the baseball bomber or leather motorcycle jacket. Click through the album to see which jacket suits your style!

Runway Rewind: Moncler, DVF, Derek Lam

The Fall/Winter 2012 collections hit the runway for only a few minutes, but you can catch the action all season long on the Neiman Marcus YouTube Channel.

Moncler Grenoble

For the past three season’s Moncler Grenoble has pulled out all the stops for the label’s New York Fashion Week show. This time last year, the Fall 2011 collection was presented via flash mob in Grand Central Station, and the year before the cold weather clothier propped models atop Pier 59′s driving range. For this year’s show a slew of skaters suited up and hit the ice at Central Park’s Wollman Rink.

Diane von Furstenberg

New York Fashion Week’s unofficial hostess, CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg, presented a colorblocked Fall 2012 collection at Lincoln Center.

Derek Lam

Derek Lam sent models clad in clean separates through a geometric maze resembling Donald Judd’s sculptures in Marfa, TX.

Kareen

6:20 am: Good morning and Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone. What I’m wearing today: black-white chiffon Theory dress, RED Valentino trench coat and  Prada shoes.

7:25-8:40 am: Stop at the office to work on the trend report, view and edit the shows I didn’t see yesterday, and one quick 8 am appointment to check out a new collection. (So many collections, not enough time in a day!)

9:25 am: At Tory Burch, Valentine’s Day intrigue. The program says that for Fall she was inspired “by the idea of a prim girl who’s under the spell of the wrong kind of guy.  She is innocent, unaware of her own sex appeal. The setting? The hotel where they meet.” Oh la la!
