Brera Orologi: The Gift of Time

Brera Watches

Four years ago Neiman Marcus picked up Brera Orologi, a new brand that had been founded by two Milanese watch industry long-timers, husband and wife team Maurizo and Tina Pasi. The couple’s time-tested  knowledge, including Maurizo’s background in watch distribution for Bulgari, Chopard, and Rolex, and Tina’s experience as a buyer at Prada and in product development at Michele, poised the duo to launch their own wristwatch label. Behold Brera: chronographs that combine timeless Italian craftsmanship with state-of-the-art materials and innovative design.

During the Men’s Event online & in stores today through Sunday, March 25, receive a Brera Sport Watch with your select regular-priced Men’s purchase of $500 or more.

Car Shoe In High Gear

Car Shoe

In 1963, The Italian Ministry of Industry and Trade awarded Gianni Mostile the patent for the original driving shoe – an innovative moccasin with rubber-blend nubs on the sole and heel. Today, the combination of creative vitality and hand-made craftsmanship continues. Car Shoe is still crafted with leather from the finest tanneries, characterized by 160 hand stitches, and hand perforated for true luxury and comfort.

Since The Prada Group took over the majority of the Car Shoe Company in 2001, they’ve continued to modernize the brand while honoring the authenticity of the Italian hand-made craftsmanship. The casual elegance of the brand continues to evolve, broadening the world of the classic moccasin and enriching it for the occasion with a matching colored tread. This Spring, the Car Shoe’s design is inspired by a “country” mood, characterized by leather straps and side buckles. Fortunately, the driving sole remains unchanged, creating the perfect mix between tradition and newness.

Shop Car Shoe at NeimanMarcus.com or in Neiman Marcus stores. During the Men’s Event at Neiman Marcus, March 22-25, there is a gift with a regular-priced men’s purchase of $500 or more.

Neiman Marcus Group to China: Ni Hao!

china bloggers

Karen Katz, center, with the GSH team and bloggers in Shanghai.

By the end of this year China will have a new multi-brand, full-price luxury and fashion e-commerce site, thanks to Neiman Marcus Group and Hong Kong-based Glamour Sales Holding.

Today in Shanghai, in the city’s tallest building, Neiman Marcus Group CEO Karen Katz announced that the company was moving into Asian e-commerce by taking a $28 million stake in Glamour Sales Holding, which currently operates successful flash sales in China in Japan. The new site will be built around well-respected luxury and fashion brands, with current-season offerings that reflect the discerning taste of the Chinese luxury customer. It will offer the finest European, American and Chinese designers. It will also feature editorial content, fashion expertise and behind-the-scenes videos to make it a reliable and indispensable source of insights about luxury brands.

“The desire for both luxury and service is growing rapidly in China,” Karen Katz wrote to NMG employees. “This really rang true for me on one of my first trips to China. I have traveled a lot… and seen some of the most beautiful stores and boutiques in the world.  Something that surprised me the most was on a visit to the Chanel boutique in Shanghai. I really thought I had seen it all, having been to Chanel stores in Moscow, Paris, London, New York and Hong Kong. But I was wrong!  I have never seen crowds in a Chanel store like I did in Shanghai… Imagine if all those shoppers received gracious and friendly service as they browsed the store the way our customers do at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. The opportunity is there and we are eager to see what unfolds on the road ahead.”

NMG executives have taken many inspiring trips to China recently. They have been impressed with Shang Xia, the new Chinese brand created by Hermes, and the extraordinary, large-scale events staged by the likes of Dior, and in contrast, the flea markets. We look forward to many more dispatches from the East!

Austin’s Barley Swine Is All That

The Austin restaurant Barley Swine has been racking up acclaim, most recently on GQ’s Ten Best New Restaurants in America, so the Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman social teams chose it as a gathering spot for the fashion people at SXSW. And wow. It did not disappoint. Barley Swine’s ever-changing menu features refined techniques applied to rustic ingredients sourced locally. Chef-owner Bryce Gilmore built his reputation out of Odd Duck Farm to Trailer—yes, a trailer stationed in a park. Barley Swine is tiny, with a spotless open kitchen that supports a feeling of camaraderie among the diners and the friendly, passionate staff. See the exquisite menu for the evening after the jump. All photos by John Pesina.

Road Testing Men’s Style With Indy Driver E.J. Viso

Credits: Photography by Greg Lotus. Styling by Kim Stanley for Neiman Marcus and Ron Laxamana for Utopia. Grooming by Emily Moses for Opus Beauty. Location: One Bal Harbour Resort & Spa.

Ernesto Jose Viso Lossada, known in racing circles as E.J. Viso, is at age 27 one of the most exciting young talents in the Izod IndyCar Series. He found his calling at age 5, racing Go Karts in his native Venezuela, and progressed in his teens through Formula 1 racing. Since 2008 he has competed in IndyCar, scoring four top-10 finishes last year. This season he’s behind the wheel of the #5 CITGO | PDVSA – KV Racing Technology Chevrolet/Firestone machine, and he expects it to be his breakout year.

NMdaily conversed with E.J. in Miami, where he currently resides, and tapped top fashion photographer Greg Lotus to shoot a “road test” of Spring’s colorful men’s wear and Orefici watches at the One Bal Harbour Resort & Spa.

NMdaily: Tell us, E.J., what defines your sport?

E.J. Viso: It is the fastest race in the world, with the fastest drivers in the world.

What makes IndyCar distinct from other racing leagues?

NASCAR has an “all-American” connection, while Formula 1 maintains the European link, but the Izod IndyCar series is a truly global sport. We have drivers from all over the world, and as the league’s only Hispanic and Latino driver, I am proud to represent that segment.

What makes this racing season feel different or special to you, compared to past seasons?

An incomparable gift to the nation from the late Walter and Leonore Annenberg, the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands opened to the public this month.  Sunnylands is a 200-acre oasis in Rancho Mirage, CA, near Palm Springs. Originally built as the winter home for the Annenbergs, it will now function as a high-level, private retreat facility as well as a center for public visitation with an exhibition program, tours, café and bookshop.

NM @ SXSW 2012

When influencers from the worlds of technology, film, music and indie fashion converge upon the SXSW festival in Austin, the diverse expression of casual yet creative personal style can be dizzying. However, some clear themes emerged: bold color, denim/chambray shirts, florals and tribal prints. Booties, hats, statement handbags (including clutches for day) and loads of bracelets were the most popular accessories. We found much inspiration for spring/summer wardrobes and we can’t wait for next year! Photos by Kristen Spaulding and Jean Scheidnes.

Louis Vuitton & Marc Jacobs on Exhibit in Paris

It might be a stretch to compare a 21st century American designer to a 19thcentury French trunk maker, but that’s the ambitious conceit of the new “Louis Vuitton – Marc Jacobs” exhibit that just opened at Paris’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs and runs through September 16th. Visitors who climb the stairs to the first floor of the multi-media exhibit are immediately confronted with formal portraits of the two men: Louis Vuitton drawn in 1892 by Studio Reutlinger and Marc Jacobs peering out of a highly stylized Rankin photograph. The show, dreamed up by curator Pamela Golbin, compares the work of these two innovators in the context of the seismic cultural and industrial shifts of their times. In broad strokes, it’s an analysis of the fashion industry during two decisive periods of enormous change—19th century industrialization and 21st century globalization. That’s really where the similarities between Mr. Vuitton and Mr. Jacobs end. After all, what do 19th century steamer trunks have in common with $3,000 Murakami bags?

You would be surprised.
