Chiara Boni: One Dress, Many Thoughts

A few weeks ago at Milan Fashion Week, Florentine designer Chiara Boni decided to ditch the traditional runway and present her Fall 2012 collection with a photo exhibit.

“I love to see my creations on many different kinds of women,” Boni says of the exhibition for her label La Petite Robe di Chiara Boni, that featured photographs she took of real women of all shapes, sizes and ages all wearing the same dress.

“All of these women live and work in this city [Milan], adding their different identities, characters and aptitudes,” Boni says of the variety of women she photographed for her One Dress, Many Thoughts exhibit. “The same dress for every woman, worn with a little shyness, a touch of craziness, or with simple femininity.”

Boni’s ability to universally flatter has attracted women in their twenties to women in their eighties to her work.

“As a woman I know how to hide imperfections to enhance beauty,” Boni says of her wrinkle-free, light-weight, draped designs that are ideal for traveling. “Elegant, sexy and comfortable, that’s all a woman needs.”

Clover Canyon, Made in L.A.

Clover Canyon Spring 2012

Clover Canyon Spring 2012

Neiman Marcus picked up California-based indie-label Clover Canyon from designer Rozae Nichols last season. The designer, who is also the name behind two other contemporary labels, Ian, which is named after her husband, and her eponymous collection Rozae Nichols, takes pride in her sweat-shop-free designs that are all made and manufactured in downtown L.A. Clover Canyons’ second season is inspired by the colored landscape of the Grand Canyon and the lush florals of the South Pacific.  The collection delivers digital printed shirt dresses, polished printed button ups and baroque-inspired printed pants, which we refer to at Neiman Marcus as fancy pants.

Thakoon Addition: African Surf

Thakoon Addition

New York-based designer Thakoon Panichgul was an instant hit among the stylish set upon launching in 2004.  No wonder his contemporary collection, Addition, shines in a sea of designer secondary lines. Now in its eighth season, Addition echoes his luxurious main line with an emphasis on wearable essentials.  Panichgul describes the spirit of Spring as “African Surf.” Ikat jersey dresses, tropical-print poplin jumpsuits and tie-dye silk pants anchor the easy, breezy bohemian feel of the Spring collection. Style.com’s Matthew Schneier describes Addition as “both a lab for testing and a winner’s circle for best-sellers to enjoy a second and third showing.” Don’t expect the simple dresses, tailored shorts or printed silk pants to stick around the stores, though. Thakoon fans adore Addition because of its fun timeless appeal and the price point is extremely appealing. However, we can look forward to Fall. Panichgul says,  “It’s a little groovier this season.”

Thakoon Addition is available at NeimanMarcus.com and Neiman Marcus stores. Shop The Current Event  online and in stores through Sunday, March 18 and receive a NM exclusive Moyna clutch with your select regular-priced Contemporary Sportswear or Dress Collections purchase of $350 or more.

SXSW Music + Street Style by The MidWasteland

As someone who has had the opportunity to shoot street style at music festivals for the past 5 years, I started feeling like once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. Though, after traveling to Austin for the SXSW Music fest (my very first!), that sentiment has changed. Compared to the others I have been to, including Lollapalooza and Pitchfork, SXSW is not gated off. You are free to roam the streets, which makes the experience more exciting than confining. You can go from venue to venue within the 3 mile radius of downtown and find a show that suits your mood. One minute, you’re at the Hype Hotel checking out the indie band you’ve been dying to see and the next minute, you’re running over to a dive bar to catch an up-and-coming hip hop act your friend won’t stop texting you about.

Project Runway All Stars – Episode 11, Finale Part 1

This recap of Project Runway All Stars contains spoilers! Stop reading if you don’t want to know details from last night’s episode.  It’s the final challenge. In the past 10 episodes the three designers left have proved their talents through some of the most original tests of creativity. Michael, Mondo and Austin have transformed dollar store trinkets into runway-worthy ensembles, lit up looks with electricity and impressed design aficionados from Diane von Furstenberg to Miss Piggy. The episode opens with Georgina Chapman, Isaac Mizrahi, and Angela Lindvall on the runway to announce that, while designers usually spend months or at least weeks on “Project Runway” designing a collection, the final challenge will be much shorter than that and will involve designing a mini-collection to showcase specific talents. Translation: 5 looks, 4 days.

Traveling With: Trina Turk

Trina Turk in Capri, photographed by her husband Jonathan.

Splashed in color and swimming with retro patterns, Trina Turk‘s caftans, maxi dresses and bikinis beg for the beach; and for Spring that’s exactly where the California-based designer sought inspiration. Work tends to determine Turk’s travels, but twice a year the designer and her photographer husband make a point to slip away and visit a place they’ve never seen before. Last summer, right before the Trina Turk Spring 2012 collection was underway, the couple crossed Turkey and Capri off their travel list.

“We chose Turkey as our vacation destination this past summer for its combination of culture, textile shopping and seaside relaxation,” Turk says. “The fact that the city of Istanbul is split between Europe and Asia is intriguing enough, but vague memories from college art history classes, the lure of the Grand Bazaar, and photos of the Aegean coast sealed the deal. On our way to Turkey, we made a quick stop in Capri. The warm sandy beaches of the Aegean, the blues of the crystalline water and the rocky terrain of the Mediterranean can be seen in our Spring delivery aptly titled ‘Mediterraneo’.”

SXSW Interactive Through the Lens of Fashion

These days every member of the fashion media flock wants to be a digital savant, or at least digitally competent. So it’s no wonder that the NMdaily staff crossed paths at SXSW Interactive with the likes of Burberry, Lucky, Teen Vogue, Lyst, trend forecaster WGSN, fashion PR powerhouse KCD, and our sister store Bergdorf Goodman. Below is a recap of just some of what we learned and discussed amid the massive, diverse 5-day scrum of panels, speakers, shows and parties in Austin, TX. All the running around left scant time for seated meals. (Thank goodness for gourmet food trucks.) And this was just the Interactive portion of the festival. Stay tuned this week for Music and Style X!

A Name to Remember: Catherine Deane

Catherine Deane

“My work is a very personal expression of my observation of nature and beauty, my exploration of culture, people and places and a strong faith in an extraordinary outcome,” says designer Catherine Deane.

In 2005, the Hong Kong-based designer established her women’s wear label in London. The foundation of her designs remain grounded in the cultural references that represent her nomadic lifestyle – far flung places and fleeting moments. This Spring, Deane’s inspiration stems from Coco Chanel’s formative years, with reference to movies “Coco before Chanel” and “Coco and Igor.”  Deane’s mix of masculine elements combined with feminine detail results in a modernist twist on traditional technique.

“I use the craft techniques as my starting point and develop an organic process of layering and sometimes taking away until I find I have reached a balance in each piece,” says Deane.

Here Comes StyleX

stylex

Style has always been prevalent at SXSW, given the cozy relationship between fashion and music, fashion and film, and increasingly, fashion and technology. Now the festival has an official style segment called StyleX, pronounced “style by.” It’s March 16-17, two packed days of fashion panels and a trade show, which are free and open to the public in Austin. It overlaps with SXSW Music, so naturally we can expect a slew of related musical showcases and parties, including the official StyleX after-party presented by Neiman Marcus! Stay tuned for street style, event coverage and more fun from Austin.

Niki the dove

Niki & The Dove headline the StyleX kick-off party this year.
