New at NM: Cover Clothing

Preoccupied with slathering her three little ones in sunscreen, former investment banker Lisa Moore had little time to protect herself. Getting greased up, then attempting to hold a sunscreen-slathered, slippery baby seemed more hassle than its worth for the bottle’s temporary protection. One night after the sun had set in the fall of 2007, the fair-skined mom had an idea – sun protective cover-ups. Sun-proof activewear already existed for children, typically found splashed in neon and hibiscus flowers, but a chic version for adults in all-day wearable cuts was not on the market. Moore called up her close friend Robyn Stevens, a former model and fashion industry vet, and the two got to work on designs that would protect their skin in the water and anywhere the sun shines.

New at NM: RLH Collection by Ralph Lauren

The RLH Hall bench. This Victorian-style bench in solid oak has a worn leather back and carved details.

The RLH Hall bench originates from a Victorian design. The solid oak piece features a worn leather back and carved details.

Ralph Lauren’s runway collections have a way of transporting you to a particular place in time. Spring took us back to America’s Jazz Age in the Roaring Twenties and Fall traveled a decade earlier to a Downton Abbey-inspired English countryside. Like Ralph Lauren ready-to-wear, Ralph Lauren Home takes that same historicist perspective to create intricate cinematic lifestyle collections that evoke an era in design.

On Set: Buenos Aires, Argentina

NM’s creative team traveled to Buenos Aires, the “Paris of South America,” to shoot one of the fashion spreads you’ll find in the May edition of The Book. Models Jourdan Dunn and Caroline Trentini posed in the city’s streets, estancias and tango halls for photographer Diego Uchitel, an Argentina native, working along with stylist Abby Kane, producer Alberto Mammi, digital tech Toto Cullen, and hair & makeup master Pedro Pianto. The NM crew didn’t have much downtime to sightsee, but managed to soak in the culture on set—watching locals tango, admiring the old world architecture, and kicking up their feet after long days of shooting at the Hotel Palacio Duhau, a French palace built in the 1930s.

Pick up a copy of The Book and turn to page 103 to read photographer and design aficionado Diego Uchitel’s  favorite spots to shop, drink and dine in the city of his birth. View the May issue at NeimanMarcus.com or download it with NM Editions for iPad.

Santiago Gonzalez Designs For Salone del Mobile

Santiago Gonzalez is not only a great connoisseur and collector of exquisite furniture, now he can say he designs it too. Gonzalez, son of handbag designer Nancy Gonzalez and president of the family business, was invited by Wallpaper magazine to collaborate with designer Aldo Bakker. They created a wooden stool, completely covered with a very rare alligator skin (the Gonzalez signature.) It is on display at Milan’s Salone del Mobile this week. The Wallpaper Handmade series occupies Palazzo Brioni during the design fair.

“Handmade is a testimony to great design, talent and ideas, and the determination to achieve the extraordinary,” said Wallpaper editor in chief Tony Chambers. “We are once again celebrating beautiful new friendships and beautiful new things.”

The stool celebrates the aesthetic codes of Santiago Gonzalez, which are the purity, balance and composition you see in his men’s accessories line. Wouldn’t it look wonderful in a man’s study, or a gentleman’s dressing room?

What Guys Wore to Coachella 2012

Chill and rain put weekend 1 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival off to a mellow start. The line for coffee/tea was three times longer than beer, and most fashions consisted of last-minute hoodie purchases. Luckily for festival goers, by day 2 the sun came out, and girls and boys in shorts were dancing in the polo fields. Day 3 ended with Tupac revived via hologram with Snoop and Dr. Dre in an ode to West Coast rap.

Photographing the general admission crowd was more interesting than the VIP areas because the guys were younger, more bohemian. Although this festival is an extremely casual (at times shirtless) affair, it tends to set style trends for the summer ahead. And fashion brands are increasingly setting up camp there. Once the typical desert climate moved in, I saw guys wearing a lot of unrestrained prints, bold color, summer suede, woven shoes and straw hats.

“A young Jackie Kennedy was our muse,” says NM art director Janet Longstreth, who along with photographer Tesh, stylist Gus Romano, makeup artist Susan McCarthy and hairstylist Greg Bitterman transformed model Crystal Renn into the beloved first lady. “Her elegance, poise and classic style was the inspiration.” A Brooklyn brownstone served as the set.

Cluny by Cynthia Steffe black & white print skirt, white silk racerback tank and hand-knit cardigan on page 91 in the April edition of The Book.

Cynthia Steffe was a household name in the ’90s, but in 2006 the designer left her eponymous label that was launched in 1989. Cynthia Steffe, the brand, continued sans-Steffe and Steffe, the designer, is now focused on her latest venture, Cluny.

“I think the product is so unique and so special,” she says of the label named after a type of lace. “There is this visual signature to it as well. When people come into shop the line at stores they say ‘oh this is Cynthia’s line, no wonder I like it.’ It looks like me.” That design signature, Steffe says, is her attention to detail and selection of prints and cuts.

“The clothes are contemporary, but there is a feminine edge to it,” she says of the aesthetic that can be seen in pieces like her modern take on the crocheted dress and her bright striped peplum tops for Spring, her favorite collection to date.

Seeing Things: Window Dressing by Sea of Shoes’ Jane Aldridge

Jane Aldridge

Jane Aldridge

Sea of Shoes’ Jane Aldridge and, her mother, Judy Aldridge of Atlantis Home unveiled a window into their world last week at the Downtown Dallas store.  The art installation referenced none other than a sea of Spring shoes and artistic sketches by Jane herself.  Jane expressed witty humor with her choice of evening footwear – the Prada smoking sandal in silver. “I have a flair for the dramatic and anything exaggerated,” says Jane.
