As a buyer you see the coolest contemporary sportswear on the market. What did you personally purchase for Spring?

I bought neutral blouses to work back to color I already own. Colored/novelty bottoms are very fun and exciting for Spring. Specifically,  Diane von Furstenberg red pants and a Rag & Bone novelty skirt.

Seeing Things: Dallas Art Fair

Dallas Art Fair

Sylvie Fleury's window installation, Neiman Marcus Downtown Dallas.

The Downtown Dallas store celebrates the Dallas Art Fair (April 13 – 15) with three art-filled windows.

“Neiman Marcus is once again honored to be a part of the Dallas Art Fair.  Having the opportunity to work with the Dallas Contemporary, to highlight an acclaimed artist such as Sylvie Fleury, has been a wonderful experience – gracing our store windows, her conceptual work engages the viewer on many levels,” says corporate art curator, Julie Kronick.

Dallas Art Fair

Swiss-born and -based Fleury immerses viewers into a world of fashion, blurring the line between commercial display and contemporary art. Fleury’s installations highlight a mix of contemporary culture, art and commercial products. Her neon signs illuminate the windows facing Ervay and Main Streets.  Graphic backdrops and fun phrases add whimsy that pops.

Dallas Art Fair

Last Thursday, guests gathered in the streets to sip champagne and wine in honor of the pop artist’s work.  Fleury was humbled by the positive reaction.  As the sun set and the neon lights glowed, the crowd enjoyed gourmet sliders and ice cream cookie sandwiches from Pokey O’s.  It was an evening of fashion, food and fun.

Stylish Space: Gift Galleries Get a Rob Dailey Makeover

Rob Dailey

Rob Dailey stands in Gift Galleries at NM Downtown-Dallas.

For the flagship store’s seasonal Gift Galleries redo, NM Downtown general manager Shelle Sills tapped Dallas decorator Rob Dailey to create Spring’s Fantasy Pop-Up Home Shop.

“This was a fun and a really great project,” says Dailey, who typically works on restaurants and residences. “This was very different and out of the box for me.” Dailey’s inspiration for the room that typically houses stacks of Assouline coffee table books and John Derian desk accessories, was none other than the great Stanley Marcus. Dailey, like Marcus, is an admirer of modern art and decided to spotlight Texas artists with pieces like Alex Remington’s Mow.

Zac Posen Heats Up Atlanta

Atlanta’s best dressed are still talking about Zac Posen‘s unforgettable Fall 2012 runway show at Neiman Marcus, which supported the National Black Arts Festival. To showcase the fresh-off-the-runway glamorous regalia, NM’s event team pulled out all the stops – including a 360 degree runway that circled the Peachtree store’s top floor. Posen, suited up in red velvet and his charming grin, brought the spectacle of his New York Fashion Week show down south, sending origami-folded ballgowns, obi-sashed pant suits, sharply cut jacquard dresses, and his latest muse Anna Cleveland, down the circular catwalk. Cleveland, the daughter of ’70s supermodel Pat Cleveland, added even more excitement to Posen’s designs with her theatrical strut. The show concluded with a standing ovation, hoots, hollers and a champagne toast!

Nostalgic “Total Look” at MOCA Los Angeles

A new exhibit at The Museum of Contemporary Art takes visitors on a nostalgic, color-soaked romp through the L.A. fashion scene of the 1960s. The Total Look: The Creative Collaboration between Rudi Gernreich, Peggy Moffitt, and William Claxton showcases the prolific and iconic partnership between acclaimed fashion designer Rudi Gernreich, his favorite model and muse Peggy Moffitt and her husband William Claxton, a noted jazz and celebrity photographer who began photographing Gernreich’s work in 1957 and documented every single collection from 1962. Curated by Decades founder Cameron Silver, the exhibit features a vibrant selection of 55 Gernreich designs from Moffitt’s personal collection as well as fashion films and photographs taken by Claxton of Moffitt modeling the body-conscious, “mod” clothes.

Rebecca Minkoff: Beyond Handbags

Rebecca Minkoff wears her "Becky" jacket inside her NYC studio.

In 2005 Rebecca Minkoff‘s “Morning After” bag crashed the fashion world. Almost overnight the M.A.B., as it’s called for short, earned a reputation of  being the ultimate partner-in-crime for the work-hard-play-hard girls of New York City. Seven years and a six-month-old baby later, Minkoff’s name-stamped goods are bigger than ever, and although you might expect this new mom to drag around a decked-out diaper bag, like her “Knocked Up” carryall, she sticks with her roots, even if her days of being out ’til dawn are long over.

“I’ve been switching off recently between the East West Skull tote and the M.A.B.!” she says about her everyday go-tos that for now double as diaper bags. “The M.A.B. is the very first bag I designed and it’s still a staple for my personal wardrobe.”

Behind The Book: Neon Butterflies by Bill Concannon

neon

In 1898 two British chemists discovered a rare gaseous element that glows when “excited electrically.” They dubbed it “neon” from Greek, meaning “new one.”

Fast forward to the 1970s, when Bay Area–based artist Bill Concannon started working with neon as his medium. He founded Aargon-Neon, a shop that produces commercial signage, in addition to teaching the craft of neon-bending in an art context.

Designers Donate Dresses for Cancer Cause

Dress 4 Yellow dresses on display at Neiman Marcus' flagship store.

Dress 4 Yellow dresses on display at Neiman Marcus' flagship store.

Atop the cosmetics and designer jewelry counters in Neiman Marcus’ flagship store stand mannequins, garbed in dresses in the color of the season from DKNY, Carmen Marc ValvoThakoon, Zang Toi, Sachin + Babi, Elie Tahari, Ralph Lauren, Tibi, David Meister, Rachel Roy, Diane von Furstenberg, and Lela Rose. These designs are inspired not by the color trend that saturated the Spring runways, but by something greater, the fight against cancer.  The 4 Yellow Foundation’s Dress 4 Yellow luncheon benefitting Lance Armstrong’s foundation Livestrong and Cook Children’s Cancer Center drew the designers to give back by creating either a new design or unarchiving a yellow runway piece.
