Mister Mort Reports: Men’s Summer Style at Pitti Uomo

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair draws trendsetters from the world’s most influential stores and style publications to Florence. While they scout European tailoring and luxury sportswear, they also look to each other for style inspiration. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein a.k.a. Mister Mort was on the scene for NMdaily.

With temperatures reaching 96F, short-sleeve woven shirts were the best look, in solids and with prints. Intriguing, non-linear prints are everywhere, even on lightweight jackets. I’m glad the humidity is not as bad as NYC in summertime. Regardless, I find it very inspiring in that they still “dress” here no matter the weather. The guys still brought it—with navy blazers in double breasted and single, worn dressed up or casually with T-shirts and sleeves pushed up, and even one with a pajama style shirt! Very interesting to see all the non-trad ways to wear the classic. Lots of minty greens and teals, both in tops and bottoms and even shoes.

See more men’s summer style at NeimanMarcus.com and Neiman Marcus stores.

Nothing says summer like a bright manicure. The ladies in our office are celebrating the official first day of the season by sporting stunning nail shades inspired by beautiful beaches, colorful cocktails and bright bathing suits. Nail polish is one of the most noticeable accessories, so there’s no holding back. Flaunt neon, ombre or glitter.

Vicky Velez, Cusp senior merchandising planner, wears Nars limited edition Thakoon Nail Polish in Anardana and Amchoor. “I was vacationing in Playa de Mujeres, Mexico and needed something bold for the beach.”

Shoe Shopping With Author Rachelle Bergstein

Christian Louboutin

Christian Louboutin Very Prive Python Pump

Women seem to shop for shoes in one of two mindsets – one, they need to find a shoe to fill a void in their closet. Or, two, they have the means to buy shoes purely to make a statement or in appreciation of the beauty of the shoe. I realized this during my shopping date with author Rachelle Bergstein, who has just published her first book, “Women from the Ankle Down:  The Story of Shoes and How They Define Us.”  It is a fun and witty look at the way women’s shoes have evolved throughout the twentieth century.  Even more fascinating is how the evolution of the shoe mimics the change in women’s roles throughout history—the growth of women’s self-confidence.  Shopping with Rachelle, who spent four years researching the history of women’s shoes, was not only fun but also quite educational.

Rachelle Bergstein

In her day-to-day life, Rachelle is a city girl who is always seeking the perfect balance between fashion and function.  She prefers wedges or flats due to her lifestyle, but appreciates a beautiful heel as well… preferably a platform.  And with her fashion sense shaped during the Grunge era of the Nineties, Rachelle favors edgier shoes that mix both masculine and feminine elements. So it is no surprise that Rachelle was immediately drawn to the Jimmy Choo studded smoking loafers.  She loves the style, and the studding keeps them edgy, but above all else they offer the “perfect mix of comfort and style.”  With a guilty look she admits, “I don’t wear flats as often as I probably should.”

The Blues of Summer

Blues from Laura Mercier, Armani and YSL

Blues from Laura Mercier, Armani and YSL

Summer makeup calls for a simple routine incorporating bold color. A dash of blue on the eyes, hydrating gloss on the lips and a golden bronze comprise an ideal summer look. So don’t be afraid of an unexpected color on your eyes. Blue can look more playful and lighter than jet black. And the shade conjures thoughts of a day on the beach. Laura Mercier Belle Nouveau Long Lash Mascara in Bleu adds a subtle blue accent to lashes. Yves Saint Laurent Waterproof Eye pencil in Ultramarine can accent both brown and hazel eyes beautifully. And it is waterproof, making it ideal for a summer day. Armani Beauty Limited-Edition Eye Palette in Ecailles Black Pearl offers a whole oceanic range with lighter hues like Sea Froth and Blue Lagoon plus bold blues Deep Blue Sea and Dark Seaweed.

Kale Naturals

We’ve been intrigued lately by plant-derived beauty products such as Tata Harper, Sulwhasoo and VenEffect. Now we have Kale Naturals, one of the first all-natural luxury skincare lines specifically formulated for men. The multi-functional high quality line was conceived two years ago by Dallas-based mothers, wives and professionals Dana Kale and Tia Pettijohn. “Our husbands are busy professionals with stressful jobs. On the weekends they are taking their sons to hockey, baseball or lacrosse. They don’t want a million products with a million steps. They were our inspiration for today’s man,” says Kale.

Conversation With: Roger Vivier’s Bruno Frisoni

Many of modern footwear’s most iconic designs trace their steps to the atelier of Roger Vivier, a French shoe designer credited with refining the stiletto heel, popularizing thigh-high boots and partnering with Yves St. Laurent for the iconic Pilgrim-buckle flats Catherine Deneuve wore in 1967’s “Belle de Jour.” The rich history of that design enterprise has been mined since 2003 when Tod’s owner Diego Della Valle relaunched the Roger Vivier brand and appointed Bruno Frisoni creative director of the Paris-based accessories company. A frequent visitor to Los Angeles, the elegant, intellectual Frenchman says he is often inspired by “the cool way of living” in Southern California. “Everyone is a star here, even the sun… The nearby desert, architecture, the great houses and interior/exterior way of living provide much inspiration, for colors, shape, everything.” Frisoni channels what he sees into reinventing the maison with modern accessories. The geometric and faceted Prismick collection has already become a house icon for the present day.

NMdaily: What is it like to step into the shoes of a well-known designer and his namesake company and bring it into another era?

Bruno Frisoni: Mr. Vivier was the great master of shoes, who seduced the great names like Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, as well as celebrities like Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Soraya, The Queen of England for her coronation in 1953. Having said this, when we started working on the relaunch and strategy of the brand, we knew from the very beginning that one thing we really wanted was to respect the name of Roger Vivier and company, but also transform the brand into a luxury maison of accessories. And I can say today that we have achieved the goal.

Vintage Pop: NM Men’s Buyers Salute Dad’s Style

Russ Patrick & John Patrick

Russ Patrick & John Patrick, Empire State Building, 1985

With Father’s Day just days away, we decided to ask NM’s dapper men’s wear buyers to tell us about their dads — the unforgettable father-son moments at the ballpark, dad’s invincible golf swing, words of wisdom, and questionable Seventies fashion fads that he managed to pull off… The consensus? Style is hereditary!

NMd: How did your father influence your personal style?

Russ Patrick, GMM of Men’s: My father’s career was in the wholesale apparel business. For many years he lived and worked in Southern California, leading sales for a popular surf-inspired brand. He always had a somewhat casual and rugged sensibility while still looking sharp. I have always favored a slightly more formal wardrobe. Perhaps it was the result of all those years in school uniforms and 22 years at Neiman Marcus!

Did he influence your career choice?

RP: Having grown up in the business all my life — I am sure that influenced my career choice, albeit on the retail side of the business.

Was there a fashion piece of advice he gave you that stuck?

RP: ALWAYS keep your shoes polished! I still polish mine myself.

What is your most cherished memory with your father?

RP: Spending time outdoors together is always at the top of the list. We spent many hours water-skiing, scuba diving, playing golf, and riding motorcycles. I received my first motorcycle on my 10th birthday. I do not know what my parents were thinking! We live in different states today, but when we get together it still revolves around outdoor activities. The only frustrating part is that he is still in such great shape, I cannot keep up with him.  And I am still unable to beat him in golf….

NM men's buyer Bruce Halus and his father.

Norm Halus and Bruce Halus, Santa Anita Racetrack, 1983.

How did your father influence your personal style?

Bruce Halus, VP of Men’s Clothing: His style was clean, professional and gentlemanly. He had a morning routine that I find myself following today. I feed the dogs, read the newspaper (although I am getting my news online) and have a light breakfast. When I get dressed I set my handkerchief, change, pen and money out the same way he does. And I never leave the house without telling my wife I love her — also learned from my Dad.
