Happy Hour: English Cucumber Martini

A martini made with small-batch, handcrafted Oxley gin and chopped English cucumber is particularly fitting this month as we contemplate all things British. This will be featured at Neiman Marcus restaurants throughout August. But if you can’t wait, you can make it at home.

English Cucumber Martini

2 oz. Oxley Classic English Dry Gin (divided)

2 oz. peeled, seeded, and chopped English cucumber

½ oz. basil simple syrup (see recipe at right)

1 oz. Fever-Tree Bitter Lemon Soda

Slice of English cucumber for garnish

4 oz. crushed ice (divided)

In a cocktail shaker, add 1 ounce of Oxley gin, chopped cucumber, and 2 ounces of crushed ice. Muddle for 10 seconds. Add remaining Oxley gin, basil simple syrup, and remaining crushed ice, then shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, preferably martini. Top with Fever-Tree Bitter Lemon Soda. Garnish with English cucumber slice. Cheers, mate!

Out of Office: Martine Assouline in Turkey

Out of office: Martine Assouline in Turkey

"One of the extraordinary mosques in Istanbul. The best way to understand this city is to ride by boat after a delicious Turkish coffee. Great moment."

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – St. Augustine

Assouline, the New York-based publishing company, has been capturing the spirit of its subjects for over 20 years. Husband and wife Prosper and Martine Assouline specialize in beautifully illustrated luxury books covering art, fashion and lifestyles. A recent trip and expansion into Turkey has prompted the publishing of two books– The Grand Bazaar and Light of Istanbul.

Out of office: Martine Assouline in Turkey

The atmosphere of the Grand Bazaar.

“My first day at the Bazaar was like discovering ‘Ali Baba’s treasures’,” says Martine.  This experience, thanks to our partner, Irem Kinay, inspired a beautifully illustrated tome displaying an overview of the history and legacy of luxury art crafts in Turkey.  Interior designer Serdar Gulgun, art expert Ottoman, and esteemed photographer Laziz Hamani reveal the vibrant spirit of the Grand Bazaar through stories presented in this volume.

In Light of Istanbul photographer Jean-Michel Berts turns his masterful eye to this enchanting city, capturing iconic masterpieces of architecture mixed with hidden places in the “mysterious enchanting moment just before the first second of dawn…you get the keys of the city to discover it when everybody is still asleep,” says Martine.

Conversation With: Charlotte Olympia Dellal

With her four-year-old shoe label Charlotte Olympia making major fashion waves, I paid a visit to London-based designer Charlotte Olympia Dellal in her Paris showroom. The whimsy of her designs and the stories behind each one are incredibly charming, as is she. The motifs included paper moons, doll faces and African animals. Next we traipsed up the road to Place Vendome, where we had a lot of laughs while posing for photographer Dan Lecca. Coincidentally our outfits kind of matched, and I’ll bet the passerby thought we were honeymooners. See Dan’s final portraits of us in the Pre-Fall issue of The Book along with the complete interview.

Ken Downing: Looking at you is like looking at a movie still from the 1940s. You are a glamorous Hollywood siren! The hair, the red lipstick…

Charlotte Olympia Dellal: You are very sweet. Hollywood has always been a major source of inspiration to me—old Hollywood through a modern lens, a bit classic, but not old-fashioned. I would hate to be called a throw back! My grandmother has always been a huge inspiration to me. Her hair, her red lipstick, the whole idea of Hollywood glamour was something I was raised around.

Bloggers Wear: Cat-Eye Sunnies

Sunglasses are an instant statement-maker, right there on your face. One silhouette shines this season amongst the cyber style pack – the cat-eye. And it’s been updated in many variations of shape. We say if it widens to a point at the corners, it’s a cat-eye. Fashion bloggers are feeling the feline-inpsired frames and enhancing their vintage appeal with equally classic summer staples – silk blouses, cutoffs, strappy sandals, denim tops. Here’s how some of our favorite fashion bloggers rocked the retro shade…

Brooklyn-based Helena Glazer of the blog The Brooklyn Blonde dons her Elizabeth and James cat-eye sunglasses with an Equipment blouse, J Brand Jeans cutoffs and Proenza Schouler handbag.

Neiman Marcus + Target! This is Actually Happening

target neiman marcus

An epic designer collaboration is coming to Neiman Marcus and Target on December 1, just in time for the holidays.

The two retailers recruited a whopping roster of 24 notable American designers to create limited-edition gift items. Some of the designers stayed within their primary product categories, and others tried their hands at new ones spanning women’s, men’s, home and children’s. Prices range from $7.99 to $499.99, with most items under $60. Our teams worked closely with the designers to ensure each piece would impress. The details and materials include real leather and silk, hand beading, hand-blown glass and 18K gold.

That’s all we can say about the items now, but we’ll keep you updated right here on NMdaily. An ad campaign including TV, print and digital will hit in the fall.

Mark your calendars. The entire collection (more than 50 gorgeous gifts) will become available for sale on December 1, at Neiman Marcus stores, Target stores, NeimanMarcus.com and Target.com. On December 1, the entire collection will be housed within a dedicated space in every store. All points of sale will offer the same merchandise at the same prices.

For months our executive teams have been meeting secretly to plot this, logging flights between Dallas and Minneapolis, and managed to keep the cat in the bag. Now we can also proudly announce that the two companies are jointly making a $1 million donation to the Council of Fashion Designers of America to celebrate the partnership and affirm their continual support the American design community.
