Tibi‘s Amy Smilovic has been going non-stop this September. Two weeks ago she debuted Tibi’s Spring 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week and now she’s jetting off to Paris with her design team in search of inspiration for the next collection. We find out what’s on the designer’s radar right now.

“Trips to Paris with my design team are always an amazing source of inspiration – Le Centre Pompidou’s exhibits and Georges’ view are favorites.”

Alice Temperley presented Spring/Summer 2013 collections for both her designer and contemporary labels at London Fashion Week this month. After the runway chaos came to a close, we grabbed a moment with the English designer to talk about the inspiration behind her Fall ALICE by Temperley collection (the more accessible of the two,) which is in stores now.

“The mood is French icons of the past and present. Think Brigitte Bardot and Vanessa Paradis — effortless, confident and with an innate sense of style and self,” Temperley says. “We have a strong juxtaposition of masculine and feminine, flattering lace jumpsuits and tailored jackets, and great layered lace 70’s style dresses. I was inspired by pin ups — 1950’s necklines and hourglass shapes but styled on the modern, cool Vanessa Paradis.”

Seen On The Runway: Lace

Akin to the sheer trend we are seeing on the Spring runways is lace, seen in classic form or reinvented in bright colors and mixed media combinations. The delicate material has been in more collections than not.

Right across the street from the NM flagship in downtown Dallas, British artist Lee Baker has created a 100 foot mural on a temporary fascia. Baker is rapidly generating a global reputation for his paintings and installations with highly contemporary color palettes and deliberately skewed perspectives.

The public art installation was commissioned as part of the RE:DEFINE exhibition and auction being held this Saturday in aid of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation. The event at The Goss-Michael Foundation, sponsored in part by Neiman Marcus, will feature 30 art lots from some of the world’s leading contemporary artists.

Conversation With: Alexander Wang

Ken Downing and Alexander Wang catch up in NYC.

KEN DOWNING: Alex, you are considered one of the most brilliant and, might I say, coolest young talents on the American scene today. How old were you when you started your first collection?

ALEXANDER WANG: I was only 20 years old. It was my sophomore year of college. I wasn’t quite sure what I was doing, but I was determined to make it work. It was only six sweaters. I didn’t know what a line sheet was. I had no merchandising skills. All I knew was I wanted to design.

…I find that I’m inspired by others around me, how people dress on the streets. It was a real challenge for me in design school. I found the ideas of fashion I was being taught were very one dimensional to my ideas of what high fashion was all about. You know, the idea of what was agreeable, what was considered luxurious. I always felt T-shirts and sweatpants, when well designed, can be the most valuable things.

KD: You have always loved a nod to the idea of gymnasium chic. You were one of the first designers in recent history to reengage with locker-room themes. You really put the whole idea of a sportif motif in motion. I think yours was one of the first shows where we saw running shorts walk the runway in quite some time.

Seen On The Runway: Sheer Madness

Tulle, chiffon and organza floated down the Spring/Summer 2013 fashion week runways in New York. These transparent textures were subtly sewn into insets or dramatically gathered on trail-leaving gowns, making statements ranging from ultra feminine (Zac Posen, Monique Lhuillier, Oscar de la Renta) to grunge (Phillip Lim, DKNY, Helmut Lang). At London Fashion Week, we have seen sheer appear at Tom Ford, Matthew Williamson, Temperley London and more.
