Seeing Things: The Diana Vreeland Documentary

Diana Vreeland surrounded by red furnishings- series, 1979

Diana Vreeland surrounded by red furnishings, 1979.

Valentino: The Last Emperor… The September Issue… Bill Cunningham New York. And now, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel. The latest in a series of must-see fashion documentaries brings to life one of the style world’s most exotic, vibrant, and fabled characters. In a life roughly spanning the twentieth century, Vreeland more than merited her “Empress of Fashion” title: 26 years as fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar, editor-in-chief of Vogue through the cultural revolutions of the 1960s, and, at age 70, a post at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which she pushed into the vanguard with fashion exhibitions as imaginative and relevant as any the world had seen.

But those are just the facts. Much more interesting is the fantastical persona Vreeland invented for herself, becoming the star of her own glamorous and adventurous drama. First-time filmmaker Lisa Immordino Vreeland (wife of Vreeland’s grandson Alexander) brings it all vividly to life, weaving photographs, interviews, animation, clips of Vreeland’s television appearances, and voice-overs into a magical 86 minutes. “To say Diana Vreeland has dealt only with fashion trivializes what she has done,” Jackie Onassis once noted. “She has commented on the times in a wise and witty manner. She has lived a life.”

On Set: The Christmas Book at Bonneville Salt Flats

bonneville

The Christmas Book 2012

Our creative team returned to Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats for this year’s Christmas Book because the play of light makes it look like a vast snowscape. It is very remote, however, and this video shows how much effort it took to create the right conditions in a very unique and challenging location. It was absolutely gorgeous, unlike anything I’d ever seen before. From a styling perspective, the salt presented a bit of a challenge. The salt would get on everything and cake onto the bottoms of all the shoes, and if left on there long, would eat up the fabric and ruin them. We had to make sure all the merch went through a thorough cleaning before being packed back up! The salt even corroded our car battery from sitting out there all day, and we had to get a jump before heading back into town. But we had a really hard-working and fun crew, which I think resulted in a beautiful story for the 2012 Christmas Book.

Road Test: Prada Levitate Shoes

Miuccia Prada has taken men’s shoes to new heights. From colorful foam platform brogues to wingtip golf shoes and rubber-dipped lace-ups, the soles on Prada’s shoes for guys stand out. For Fall, a new shoe series appropriately titled ‘Levitate‘ features transparent air-bubble soles. The sport-style support might seem more fit for a workout than the office, but it’s precisely this clever juxtaposition that keeps the luxury label’s fans on their toes.

Assistant buyers and Max and Chris road-test the Levitate shoe at the park next to the NM flagship.

To get a better sense about what the sneaker/dress shoe hybrid is all about, we challenged men’s shoe assistant buyers Max Lysak and Chris Buffington to road-test the Levitate.

A close-up on the elevated footwear.

"The Levitate combines the two types of shoes Men typically rely on: 1. A dress shoe for work, and 2. A sneaker for leisure," Buffington says. "The air bubble is 360 degrees, compared to other sneakers that offer similar construction only in a few areas of the sole. This craftsmanship adds extra comfort on a daily commute."

When asked what they would wear the cross-over footwear with, both buyers agreed: anything!

Lysak, who admits he favors the brushed silver version on his colleague’s feet, says “the casualness of the sole with the leather upper gives off the young, hipster, look. Pairing them with a clean, slim outfit is fresh.”

“A pair of cuffed dress pants to work, dark denim at night, or shorts on a Saturday afternoon,” Buffington concurs, as he jumps off a park bench demonstrating the shoe’s athletic traction. “The sole purpose of the Levitate collection is versatility… no pun intended.”

Neiman Marcus + Target: The Products!

You’ve waited very patiently for this, and for that alone you belong on Santa’s “nice” list. NM and Target announced an epic co-collaboration with 24 CFDA designers way back in July. We now present the collection, which will be available December 1. As promised, it’s chockablock with giftable items for women, men, children, pets and home. What’s on your list?

Today in New York the retailers unveiled the products to the press, appeared on “Good Morning America” and announced a major integration into the ABC series “Revenge.” Target and Neiman Marcus will be the sole sponsors of the show’s November 11 finale, and in lieu of commercials, the Revenge team is creating original content incorporating the #Holiday24 collection. It will be stylish, scandalous, and it will destroy you.

Seeing Things: CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Series

CFDA

Every year we look forward to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund to identify emerging designers with the greatest potential. It’s one of the major ways the CFDA nurtures American design, and one of the reasons NM and Target jointly donated $1 million to the CFDA this season. This year we can all follow the finalists’ journey, via a documentary series on Vogue.com. New episodes are loaded on Tuesdays.

Stylish Space: Cathy Kincaid’s Eastern Bazaar

This month the gift gallery in the NM flagship got a facelift. Interior designer Cathy Kincaid—with help from decor-world friends Michelle Naussbaumer, Lisa Fine and Charlie Birdsong—transformed the sales floor into an intimate dinner-party space. The designers’ cross-cultural concept, which fused a fuchsia Moroccan tent with pagoda table toppers and Indian-inpired illustrated place cards, created the ultimate setting for international cuisine, cocktails and camaraderie.
