NM @ Marfa

You may remember the desolate Marfa landscape from the movie Giant, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean. Or from There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men. Or perhaps you remember the “insider’s” trip to Marfa, starting at $9,500 per couple, in the 2010 Neiman Marcus Christmas Book. Thanks to the late artist Donald Judd and his Chinati Foundation, the little far West Texas town of Marfa, with a population of 2,121, is considered one of the world’s most important destinations for large-scale contemporary art.  This art oasis, nestled high in the Chihuahuan Desert, hosts artists, galleries and cuisine to impress the discerning traveler looking for something off the beaten path.

Toms Shoes Get Crafty

A series of “Style Your Sole” events with Toms Shoes kicked off at NorthPark Dallas last weekend. Artists visited the store to customize canvas Toms according to kids’ wishes. It was not only a fun activity for kids, but also an opportunity for them to learn about the worldwide need for children’s shoes and what Toms is doing to help. (For every pair of shoes sold, Toms donates a pair to a child in need.)

You’ve Come A Long Way, Rebecca Taylor

Rebecca Taylor

Taylor, third from left, with models in her designs.

New Zealand-born designer Rebecca Taylor visited Dallas to present her girly, Seventies-infused spring and summer collections at Neiman Marcus NorthPark. NMdaily sat down with the warm and chatty Kiwi to discuss the inspiration for her collections and embracing the feminine. Throngs of women roamed the floor in Taylor’s signature flowing dresses. The gracious designer even signed a copy of the coffee-table book, American Fashion Designers at Home, which features her and her young family in their stylish New York apartment.

NM:  What was your inspiration for your spring/summer collection?

RT: I really love that concept of the Charlie girl from the Seventies. She’s not a hippie, not bohemian; she’s very stylish and confident and career-oriented and sexy and smart. It was really the beginning of women’s lib and that’s what I grew up with… All my cousins were like that, my mum was like that. The flared trousers, the high waisted pants, the silk blouses, the gold hoop earrings.

The Eyes of Robert Rodriguez

Robert RodriguezKnown for the exceptional tailoring and finishing he brings to his contemporary line, Robert Rodriguez has become an editorial and celebrity favorite. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, where he received the prestigious Critics Award for Best Designer of the Year, Rodriguez went on to create his eponymous collection. We caught up with the Angeleno at Neiman Marcus’ Fashion Rules party in Dallas, where Rodriguez showcased his Spring collection.

NM: Could you tell me about the Spring collection you are presenting today?

RR:  Spring is really Seventies glam.  I was inspired by the Seventies movie, The Eyes of Laura Mars, with Faye Dunaway.  In the movie she plays a fashion photographer, and there are all these great, soft-focus fashion shoots and models. So the collection is flowy, breezy, and soft with a slight Moroccan influence.  There are wide-leg pants and lots of white with gold accents and a pop of color that I call ocean, which is a vivid cerulean blue, and bright orange against a mostly neutral palette of camel, white, and black.

Erdem, Fall 2011, The Artist’s Wife

ErdemThe tempestuous relationship between artists and their wives—like Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner—lent inspiration for Erdem’s Fall collection. Carrying on the trend towards knee length hemlines and ladylike polish, but this time with a couture touch to the lace overlays, embroidery and painterly prints. Erdem’s poetic prints took on darker brush strokes for Fall, straying from the florals he did for spring to create a sophisticated digital collage that gave a vibrant watercolor effect to the rich colors bleeding into each other.
