EJ Viso’s Guide to Packing Light and Fast

Earlier this year we road tested Spring men’s wear in Miami with IndyCar driver EJ Viso, but he’s a very busy man these days, with the IndyCar racing circuit nearing its season’s end. This weekend he competes in the Go Pro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma. Next it’s on to Baltimore, then back to California. And not only does EJ race, but he manages other drivers. Busy! So when our friends at Tumi started shooting their Case Studies, a look at the packing habits of stylish globetrotters, we put our favorite speedracer forward. We can all learn something about packing from a man who has this little time to fuss around.

Earlier this summer, we cheered EJ at the Texas Motor Speedway.

On Set: A Dune For Brunello Cucinelli

Brunello Cucinelli

Sure looks like sand...

By now you must know the story—how Brunello Cucinelli started with Italian cashmere sweaters and has developed into a head-to-toe, casual-luxe lifestyle brand, produced by cherished artisans in a medieval town in Italy. (If you’re unacquinted, you’ll enjoy the video here.)  There’s an unmistakable Cucinelli look nowadays, comprised of delicious layers of ultra-soft, wonderfully textured, neutral-colored separates that bridge urban sophistication and country coziness. The September Book from NM contains an insert dedicated to the women’s Fall collection, photographed by Alistair Taylor-Young. It shows two women, swaddled in Cucinelli, contemplating the change of seasons on a windswept sand dune. Except that’s not a sandy beach, it’s a studio filled with semolina—the wheat particles used in pasta.

Brunello Cucinelli

Not sand.

Somehow semolina seems appropriate, since Cucinelli’s company is renowned for its outstanding employee cafeteria, and the epic industry dinners that it hosts in Italy every season.

The plumed necklace is exclusive to NM.

You may also notice the plumed necklace worn throughout the shoot—it’s exclusive to NM.

Up Close: Brunello Cucinelli runs through August 26 online and in NM stores.

Bam! Pow! Phillip Lim!

3.1 Phillip Lim

The Fall collection from 3.1 Phillip Lim was inspired by the spirit of comic books, or graphic novels, such as Sin City and V For Vendetta and the neo-noir heroines who inhabit them. The comic book is the natural medium to tell this story, so Phillip Lim co-wrote Kill The Night, an original comic book, with John Ostrander. Jan Duursema of Star Wars comic book fame was commissioned to draw it. “A story of duality and metamorphosis, day and night, black and white, love and betrayal,” it’s the world’s most fashionable comic book—says so right on the cover. Visit 31philliplim.com to reserve a copy.

On Set: Burberry Kids

“Kids are a blast to work with! We look for lots of personality and the ability to take direction well. With the little 6-month-olds it is tougher, but they did great in this Burberry shoot. We try to schedule them first thing in the morning so they have lots of energy. We also try to funnel any photo direction through one person (either the photographer or the on set stylist) to avoid things getting too overwhelming or confusing for the little ones.”  —Kathy Cunningham, Art Director

Rachel Zoe Jewelry in a Shoppable Video

We are more than a little excited about the launch of jewelry from Rachel Zoe Collection, and to mark the occasion we have created the first shoppable video from Neiman Marcus. You click directly on the “hot spots” to pause the action and look closer at the item of interest. The music, aptly enough, is called “Analog or Digital” by the band Wildlife Control. Be sure to check out the rest of the interactive features on our Rachel Zoe-dedicated Facebook tab. The trivia quiz is especially, ahem, rewarding.

Karlie Kloss to Front NM Holiday Campaign With Target

This morning WWD broke the news that model Karlie Kloss will be the face of the NM + Target holiday collaboration. The campaign shot by Craig McDean and styled by Alex White will encompass print, TV, online and social media. Ad agency Spring of London also tapped Quentin Jones, an illustrator, filmaker and animator, to be involved. Orlando Pita styled Karlie’s hair into a high, sleek ponytail.

Since Karlie has an NM favorite for several seasons, she was a natural choice. Most recently she appeared in the PreFall issue of The Book, in a London story.

Jason Wu’s First Fall Campaign

Behold Jason Wu‘s first Fall campaign, shot by Willy Venderperre and starring Shalom Harlow. “I was thrilled to work with Shalom, she was such an icon for me growing up. Through her unique looks, combined with her understanding of movement  she was able to transformed herself into the strong warrior woman that represented my Fall collection,” said Jason, who was inspired by three archetypes of Chinese iconography—military Mao jacket, royal court of Qing Dynasty, and the 1940’s Hollywood classics films like “Shanghai Express”—and used all three elements to create an urban warrior. And let’s not overlook the ladylike handbags.

Video: Holiday Press Preview With Target

Last week national magazine editors had the privilege of being first to preview the mother of all design collaborations, the #Holiday24 collection from Neiman Marcus, Target and 24 CFDA designers. After braving a bizarre NYC hailstorm, they were astonished at the breadth and desirability of the products. It’s a cliche to say there’s something for everyone, but the collection really does offer something unexpected for everyone on your holiday checklist. Don’t just take my word for it; see what some of the editors had to say. Thanks to our friends at Target’s blog aBullsEyeView for the video.
