Naeem Khan: Polo Player, Art Collector, RHONY Observer

Designer Naeem Khan swung into Neiman Marcus San Francisco to meet fans of his stunning, hand-worked eveningwear before heading to the Asian Art Museum, where his gowns were showcased in conjunction with a new exhibit on Maharaja’s jewels. Before it all, we spoke with the Indian-American designer about dressing the First Lady, taking up polo and, oddly enough, The Real Housewives of New York City.

NM: Did you ever think your collection would be paired with these historic jewels?

NK: Since I was a kid, this type of thing has always been my dream. I want to be known for taking something from the history of India—clothing made by hand and embellished by hand, and so many humans involved in working on each piece. Step by step, that is coming. But it’s taken me 30 years since I started working with Halston as a teenager to where I am today.

NM: Your business has grown since the recession.

L’Amour Fou: Remembering Yves Saint Laurent

As the title L’Amour Fou suggests, Pierre Thoretton’s film about the late great Yves Saint Laurent and his business and life partner Pierre Bergé isn’t merely a movie about fashion, but a film about an intense love affair that spanned over four decades and had fashion as its backdrop.

After setting out to make a documentary about the record-breaking $477 million sale of the couple’s art and furniture collection at Christie’s, the first-time director Thoretton found that the real story was the men behind the collection and the deep affection and connection they shared.

Nancy Gonzalez Sees Red As Neutral

Colombian designer Nancy Gonzalez swung into Neiman Marcus’ San Francisco store to meet  fans of her super-luxe bags and showcase her newest tropics-inspired collection. She talked totes, style icons (you’d be surprised), and her goals of branching into shoes and home decor in the near future.

NM: Tell us about the Spring 2011 collection that you’re showing here today.

NG: First off, I really don’t believe in collections. It’s more about a permanent collection that I add more colors and styles to, because I believe in permanent things that you can wear forever. I love real things and natural things, and I was thinking about tropical areas and how color is so infinite. I live in Colombia around the fruit, the birds, the orchids. There are so many colors that I want to use all of them. But for this season, I did a lot of turquoises and pinks. Red is always there. I think of it as a neutral color. In terms of skins I used a lot of crocodile, but in different finishes: matte, shiny, pearlized, and metallic.

Claiborne Swanson Frank showcased her photo series “Indigo Light,” a collection of portraits of “the loves of her life”—including her sister Alexis Swanson Traina, Vanessa Getty, and designer Whitney Pozgay—in San Francisco’s Neiman Marcus last week. A former assistant to Anna Wintour, Swanson Frank dove into photography full time last year, on the encouragement of her friends and Vogue colleagues Lauren Santo Domingo and Ivan Shaw. Now, she’s hoping to bring back portraiture in a big way and has already logged some impressive commissions, photographing the homes of Santo Domingo and Amanda Brooks for Vogue, and signing on to create a book for Assouline.
