Mister Mort Reports: Paris Men’s Fashion Week

Sweet relief from the heat of Milan! In Paris it’s always intriguing to see the creativity of the fashion students who crash the line for shows, alongside the pros. Everywhere, I’ve noticed bold prints, fleece crewnecks (often with backpacks) and a few monochromatic looks as well. When we can get away from the runways for a while, we scope indie brands at the trade shows. At the Capsule Show, guys looked deliberately casual, as they have for most of PFW.

Mister Mort Reports: Milan Men’s Fashion Week

The heat wave follows us to Milan Men’s Fashion Week. A lot of the guys are wearing woven shirts to keep cool, but it’s surprising how many are still layering. Khaki, white and navy blazers aplenty. Crewneck layers, in the form of T-shirts or modified sweatshirts, add pops of color. Minty greens appeared both off and on the runway. (Burberry Prorsum and Ermenegildo Zegna showed them.) Linens and straw fedoras are very appropriate.

Mister Mort Reports: Men’s Summer Style at Pitti Uomo

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair draws trendsetters from the world’s most influential stores and style publications to Florence. While they scout European tailoring and luxury sportswear, they also look to each other for style inspiration. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein a.k.a. Mister Mort was on the scene for NMdaily.

With temperatures reaching 96F, short-sleeve woven shirts were the best look, in solids and with prints. Intriguing, non-linear prints are everywhere, even on lightweight jackets. I’m glad the humidity is not as bad as NYC in summertime. Regardless, I find it very inspiring in that they still “dress” here no matter the weather. The guys still brought it—with navy blazers in double breasted and single, worn dressed up or casually with T-shirts and sleeves pushed up, and even one with a pajama style shirt! Very interesting to see all the non-trad ways to wear the classic. Lots of minty greens and teals, both in tops and bottoms and even shoes.

What Guys Wore to Coachella 2012

Chill and rain put weekend 1 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival off to a mellow start. The line for coffee/tea was three times longer than beer, and most fashions consisted of last-minute hoodie purchases. Luckily for festival goers, by day 2 the sun came out, and girls and boys in shorts were dancing in the polo fields. Day 3 ended with Tupac revived via hologram with Snoop and Dr. Dre in an ode to West Coast rap.

Photographing the general admission crowd was more interesting than the VIP areas because the guys were younger, more bohemian. Although this festival is an extremely casual (at times shirtless) affair, it tends to set style trends for the summer ahead. And fashion brands are increasingly setting up camp there. Once the typical desert climate moved in, I saw guys wearing a lot of unrestrained prints, bold color, summer suede, woven shoes and straw hats.

New York Fashion Week – Men’s Style by Mister Mort

At New York Fashion Week I’ve seen double-breasted silhouettes in both blazers and overcoats, and peacoats are  increasingly popular. Blazers pass as outerwear in mixed weather, or layer under down coats when it’s colder. I’m also seeing some great color—in overcoats, chinos, corduroys—always a reminder that Spring isn’t far away, even on some frigid days. There are lots of bracelets around, and usually more than one.

Street Style: Paris Men’s Fashion Week F/W 2012

Paris was rainy and gray as the men’s Fall/Winter 2012 collections paraded through, and the editors and buyers seemed to take a more casual approach to dressing—wrapping themselves in stripes, plaids and camouflage. They mixed great outwear and workwear with chinos and cardigans, keeping it all classic.

Pitti Uomo Report: Bold Color

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair in Florence is an essential market for retailers of European tailoring and luxury sportswear. The semiannual installation, which wound down today, raised the curtain on the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. It was also ground zero for men from all over the world, of all ages, to display their sartorial savoir faire. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein was on the scene for NMdaily.

Not that Italians need a moderate winter as an excuse to wear color, but they’re having one. I saw bright blues, shades of pink and orange, and of course the signature red. With the spring-like temperatures, I saw quite a few accessories with pops of color as well. See you in Milan…

Pitti Uomo Report: Double Breasted Jackets

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair in Florence is an essential market for retailers of European tailoring and luxury sportswear. The semiannual installation, happening this week, raises the curtain on the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. It is also ground zero for men from all over the world, of all ages, to display their sartorial savoir faire. These guys know the rules well enough to break them, to outstanding effect. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein is on the scene for NMdaily.

The Double Breasted is standard dress code for Pitti Uomo, and this season was no different. They wore double breasted suits as well as blazers worn more casually, paired with khakis, cargos, (yellow) cords and white jeans. Winter whites work exceptionally well in Firenze.

Pitti Uomo Report: Dots

Today I saw lots of polka dots. Dotted scarves in cottons, silks & wools. In neckwear, I saw dots in both silk and knit. While we are talking about accessories, I also spotted (pardon the pun) pocket squares and socks and even a shirt. Whether you’re brave enough to wear a bold colored scarf or more of a traditional Churchill dot necktie, dots are classic!
