Seeing Things: “Impact” 50 Years of the CFDA

BILL BLASS, red cashmere cardigan and red silk satin long skirt, 1984, USA, gift of Bill Blass, Ltd.Fashion Institute of Technology / SUNY, FIT Library Dept. of Special Collections and FIT Archives.
This season the Boca Raton Museum of Art honors the illustrious designs created by members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). IMPACT: 50 Years of the CFDA is the first museum exhibition to celebrate the quintessentially American artistry of the leading fashion trade organization in the United States. On view from January 29 through April 21, 2013, the exhibition includes garments and accessories by the most impactful creators of the last fifty years.

Featured in the exhibition are interactive touchscreen displays that illustrate a timeline of American fashion and recognize the nearly 600 designers who have been members of the CFDA over the last five decades. Each living designer selected to participate in the exhibition has chosen a single object or ensemble that best represents his or her impact on the fashion world. Work by historical CFDA members have been selected by exhibition curators, Patricia Mears, deputy director of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, and Fred Dennis, the FIT museum’s senior curator.

“American designers have always had impact on how people dress,” said CFDA president, Diane von Furstenberg. “In honor of that creativity and in celebration of the CFDA’s 50th anniversary, we are proud to present, in partnership with the Boca Raton Museum of Art, an exhibit that represents the tremendous work of our members for the last five decades. ‘Impact’ was the one word that came to mind immediately – it is so strong and defining of our individual and collective influence that we knew right away that our exhibit would be called Impact: 50 Years of the CFDA.”

How It’s Made: lemlem

Liya Kebede wears lemlem
When supermodel Liya Kebede discovered that traditional weavers in her native country of Ethiopia were losing their jobs due to a decline in local demand for their goods, the fashion industry vet wanted to help. Recognizing the beauty, quality and historic significance of their work, Kebede decided to found a clothing collection made by Ethiopian artisans.

Dedicated to preserving the art of weaving and inspiring economic independence, Kebede fittingly named the collection lemlem, meaning to flourish or bloom in Amharic. Not only does the handcrafted collection preserve an ancient art form, it adds diversity to the modern day fashion market all while creating prosperity for others.

As another facet of her commitment to African causes, Kebede founded The Liya Kebede Foundation, whose mission is to reduce maternal, newborn and child mortality and to improve the health and well being of mothers and children worldwide. Her cause is also supported by her work as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN’s World Health Organization. Kebede hopes that by heightening the awareness of these issues, international donors and local governments may be encouraged to increase their budgets on maternal and child health.

Inspired: Lele Sadoughi Jewelry

Lele Sadoughi
The new name to know in jewelry is Lisa “Lele” Sadoughi. Ring a bell? Maybe not, but her aesthetic most likely will. Lele has been designing swoon-worthy jewels for years, first at Ippolita, then launching a jewelry collection for a popular retail chain, and now serving as design director at Tory Burch. Most recently, the Texan-turned-New Yorker extends her prolific design eye to an eponymous enameled jewelry collection. NMdaily sits down with Sadoughi to see what sparked her Spring 2013 designs.

Lotus & Scarab necklace.
The Source: I’m inspired by a place and a time. I like to create a world based on the architecture, paintings, and feelings of an era. I am always traveling, researching, and thinking about the next idea.
I love to scour flea markets all over the world. I recently spent some time in Marrakech, Morocco digging through piles of dusty jewels in the shops throughout the souks. I recently visited Seoul, Korea and was truly inspired by all the modern technology around me. Last month, I headed to Mexico to soak in all the colors in their pottery and woven clothing.
I also make several trips a year to the Picture Collection on the 3rd floor of the Bryant Park Library. It is the place where broken books lay to rest and you can rent out tear sheets from these battered books. I soak up anything that is grand with scale and color.

Inspiration
The Inspiration: For Spring 2013, I was really interested in the early 1920′s with the resurgence of Egyptian architecture and design. I wanted to capture the mechanical, geometric deco look and add the fantasy of Ancient Egypt.
This season, I was inspired by the Egyptian revival upon the discovery of King Tut’s tomb in the early 1920′s. I wanted to reinterpret ancient Egyptian columns, drawings of lotus flowers, and jeweled headdresses into modern, geometric elements.
I really love stacking my slider bracelets. I looked at many drawings of ancient Egyptian painted columns with rows of painted lotus flowers, stripes, and colorful drawings. My slider bracelets are meant to be stacked on each arm and can tell a different story with each color combination worn.
The Attraction: In the 1920′s there was a shift in the direction of costume jewelry; it was no longer about making imitations of precious jewelry, but about creating art. For my Spring 2013 Collection, I played around with the stripes from the Pharaoh’s scepters, made golden falcons, and even created abstract lotus flowers. Basically, I am trying to create a new world from old ideas each season.

Lotus earrings.
The Vision: Costume jewelry should be memorable. I think about the woman that wants a button earring for every day and the fabulous chandelier earring for special occasions. We need a piece to fit all our moods.

Bloggers Wear: Chloé Suzanna Bootie

Chriselle Lim, The Chriselle Factor
Chloé’s Suzanna bootie caused a fashion frenzy in 2008 when style icons Kate Bosworth and Sienna Miller could not take the go-with-everything booties off their feet. After an almost-immediate international sell-out, the French fashion house finally brought the boot back for an encore in the Spring of 2012. Today, nearly six years since its release, the triple buckle boot‘s allure is stronger than ever. Fashion bloggers continue to instigate the statement shoe’s must-have appeal by styling it with casual chic staples like chunky knits, motos and distressed denim.

Road Test: Isaia Aquaspider Suit

NM’s Bruce Halus, VP of men’s clothing, ensures that our stores are stocked with the most exceptional menswear the market has to offer. So when Aquaspider, a water resistant fabric milled exclusively for Isaia, splashed onto the suit scene, Halus, an avid paddle boarder, was intrigued.

Aquaspider’s tailored technology is obtained at the fiber level, allowing the fabric to take on a wrinkle, stain, and water resistant quality. This unique fabrication not only grants the garment to breathe and retain its original hand (feel), it gives the material a natural stretch that moves and molds to the wearer’s body.

Like any NM buyer, Halus wanted to really test the claims of Aquaspider before the new product made its way into stores. So on a routine morning before work he tied up his paddle board and drove to nearby White Rock Lake for a sunrise cruise. But on this particular morning, he traded his typical wet suit for a Neapolitan-made Isaia suit.

Halus set sail with ease and confidence, noting Aquaspider’s flexibility as he took on the open water. As for water resistance, (like a paddle board pro Halus didn’t go overboard) the waves failed to inflict water damage distress.

The wet suit takes on a whole new meaning.

Inspired: Brera Orologi + Stephen Gamson

“Meeting in the Rain” by Stephen Gamson, 2010
For the holidays Brera Orologi commissioned pop artist Stephen Gamson to design a limited-edition watch collection exclusively for Neiman Marcus.

Brera Orologi + Stephen Gamson
The American artist faced the Italian watchmaker’s unisex Eterno Piccolo and Eterno Solotempo styles with his signature contemporary hieroglyphic-like symbolism. Resulting in an artful juxtaposition of Gamson’s transcendent work—a vocabulary of bold symbols such as sunshine, hearts, silhouette characters, human forms and other universally understood iconography—with an object that literally depicts time.

“Fifth Wheel” by Stephen Gamson, 2009
“Ancient hieroglyphics whisper secrets on walls of pyramids and timeless cave dwellings, speaking volumes about the ancient societies that once ruled the earth. Signage is a global language that is spoken through symbols, understood by all in the modern age of globalization and communication. I celebrate this iconic imagery through its relevance to activities that define the lives of our modern society.” - Stephen Gamson
