The Blues of Summer

Blues from Laura Mercier, Armani and YSL

Blues from Laura Mercier, Armani and YSL

Summer makeup calls for a simple routine incorporating bold color. A dash of blue on the eyes, hydrating gloss on the lips and a golden bronze comprise an ideal summer look. So don’t be afraid of an unexpected color on your eyes. Blue can look more playful and lighter than jet black. And the shade conjures thoughts of a day on the beach. Laura Mercier Belle Nouveau Long Lash Mascara in Bleu adds a subtle blue accent to lashes. Yves Saint Laurent Waterproof Eye pencil in Ultramarine can accent both brown and hazel eyes beautifully. And it is waterproof, making it ideal for a summer day. Armani Beauty Limited-Edition Eye Palette in Ecailles Black Pearl offers a whole oceanic range with lighter hues like Sea Froth and Blue Lagoon plus bold blues Deep Blue Sea and Dark Seaweed.

The Bronzers of Summer

Bronzers

Bronzers from Armani, YSL and Guerlain

Substitute a bronzer for the sun’s harmful rays and safely get the sun-kissed glow you want. Use them on face, shoulders, neck, and décolleté to enhance your natural color for the season. Yves Saint Laurent’s summer makeup collection features a Terre Saharienne bronzer with Sun Radiance pigments and SPF 12. The Armani Beauty Limited-Edition Bronze Color Face Palette has a highlighter that’s perfect for contouring. And you can never go wrong with Guerlain, which continues to create beautiful bronzers. The limited edition Terra Soleia Bronzer is embossed with a radiant sun; the universal shade is mixed with iridescent golden particles.

What’s Inside: Beauty Buyer Emily’s Makeup Bag

NM assistant beauty buyer Emily Wisniewski

NM assistant beauty buyer Emily Wisniewski

The NM beauty buying team scouts, sniffs and samples every “prestige” beauty product on the market. So what are the industry experts wearing every day? We asked NM assistant beauty buyer Emily Wisniewski, who confesses to a pretty extensive daily regimen, to show us the essentials she brings to the office for those sometimes necessary touch-ups.

Emily brings these essentials to the office for touch-ups.

Emily carries these essentials to the office.

1. I like keeping my La Mer regenerating serum with me in case my skin needs repairing. It’s great to use if I have any irritated skin on my face or even papercuts on my fingers from the office!

2. Kiehl’s lip balm #1 in cranberry keeps my lips nice and soft with a slight hint of color.

3.  I use Bobbi Brown bronzer (natural #1) because it  gives my skin some natural-looking color. I’ve used bronzers that make my skin look orange, but Bobbi Brown’s makes it look like I have a really great summer tan.

4. Yves Saint Laurent glossy stain (#7) is the easiest lip color for a working lady. The color stays all day, without reapplying.

5. I always carry my Cle de Peau concealer. It is my instant fix if I have any kind of beauty malfunction.

6. My favorite product of the moment would have to be the Kate Somerville Dermal Quench Liquid Lift. I can’t get over how clear and bright my skin has become after using this.

7. While this Lancome Color Fever lipgloss in heartstroke may look a little bright and loud, it’s actually very sheer, almost nude with a hint of color. Perfect for summer.

8. I keep my Le Metier Visage de Soie powder with me in case my skin starts to get oily.

Bold Lip vs. Nude Lip

Jason Wu, Spring 2012

Bold lip: Jason Wu, Spring 2012

Summer is all about a sun-kissed glow and fresh face. Both a bold and nude lip can work for this effect. Emphasize coral, pink or red lips with a simple bronzy/radianct face. Or play up your eyes and show off a neutral, healthy pout.

For a Bold Lip:

Bold

Yves Saint Laurent Beaute Glossy Stain in Rouge Gouache – This revolutionary product delivers on its promise to have the staying power of a stain, but the look and feel of a gloss. The oversized doe-foot applicator gets it right every time. Rouge Gouache is a very bold, opaque raspberry pink.

Tom Ford Beauty Ultra Shine Lip Gloss in Lost Cherry – It might say it is a gloss, but these lip colors from Tom Ford are very highly pigmented. The high shine formula has great staying power and smells delicious. Lost Cherry is a true, balanced red. (And a naughty little joke.)

Beauty Review: Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow

bobbi brown

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow

Summer makeup routine calls for a quick application with products that have serious staying power. We are more likely to have longer days, spending an evening on a restaurant patio or grilling by the pool as the sun sets. No one wants to worry about re-primping when the weather is warm and celebration is in full swing.

Bobbi Brown’s reign in long-wear eye color began with the award-winning Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner. This little pot will always have a place on my vanity. It is transfer-resistant but requires a brush to apply.

To follow up on the success of gel eyeliner, Bobbi Brown developed Long-Wear Cream Shadow, a range of award winning eye shadows that achieve perfect wearability. While it is creamy in texture, the formula contains polymers that adhere the color to the eyelids. There is no creasing or smearing and the shades stick through the longest days. She added five new shades recently that offer an on-trend metallic and pastel look. I’d suggest investing in the Bobbi Brown Cream Shadow Brush – it picks up and applies the pigment effortlessly.

Beauty News: Pastel Eyes

pastel eyes

For a change of pace this summer, embrace the pastel eye shadows that are popping up everywhere. Don’t worry; this isn’t a return of the Eighties. Think of it as a way to summerize the smokey eye. Play with the palettes to create soft, sophisticated gradations. If you haven’t worn it in a while, a little color will make a big difference.

Dior Beauty Five-Color Eye Shadow, Croisette Summer

Looking like a splash in the swimming pool, this palette is actually inspired by the sophisticated pleating technique used on the fabric of Dior dresses. These Mediterranean colors aren’t meant to be opaque, but just for a wash on the lids and perhaps just a bit below the lash line.

Artist in Residence: Lily Apardian for Guerlain

In this new series we ask one of our talented makeup artists from across the country to interpret the NM beauty look of the season. The Spring Face is focused on defined brows and pink pouts. For our first installment, we meet artist Lily Apardian, a Guerlain artist from NM Bellevue (Seattle) with 15 years of experience.

Guerlain artist Lily Apardian from NM Bellevue interprets the Spring face.

Lily Apardian prescribes the Spring face.

When did you start loving makeup? I always loved it, even as a teenager. But now when I look back I  sometimes wonder, what was I thinking? I had a moment where I had blue eye shadow all over my entire eye. It wasn’t a good look.

What attracts you to this industry? Beauty is exciting. Every time we open a box or have a new collection you can’t help but be excited to try it, and to share what’s new and amazing with your customers.

What is the best part about your job? When people tell me they’ve never worn makeup or that they are intimidated by makeup. It gives me the opportunity to help and show them how easy it is! The beauty about makeup is that if you don’t like how your makeup is applied you can just wash it off. There are no consequences.

Apardian works with a customer in the cosmetics department at NM Bellevue.

Describe your daily beauty routine. My look begins with skin care, then primer, then a concealer – I use the Illuminator which can also be used as foundation, eye liner, most of the time a nude eye, eye brows, mascara, blush and or bronzer, lipstick and lipgloss. For me it’s all about the natural look. So you can have a lot of makeup on, but you don’t look like you have a lot on.

Do you have an all-time favorite product that you can’t live without? Blush. You could be stranded on an island and if you have blush you could use it as an eye shadow, as your blush and as your lip color! The blush I use is the new Guerlain Terracotta liquid blush in #7.

Shop Guerlain at Neiman Marcus stores and on NeimanMarcus.com. To book an appointment with Lily in Bellevue call 425.452.3300 x2128.

Beauty Review: Tom Ford Brow Sculptor

Tom Ford Brow Sculptor

Tom Ford Brow Sculptor

Put those tweezers down. Bold brows are not only on trend this Spring; they naturally define and enhance the structure of the face. The full brow can make even a clean face more polished. The adored designer, Tom Ford, has said that brows are the only part of the face you can dramatically change without surgery. And he has created what I think is the best tool for grooming and filling in the hairs: Tom Ford Brow Sculptor.

First, use the spooly (grooming brush) on one end to direct and straighten the hairs. On the other end, the flat “calligraphy” tip of the crayon allows for precise but thick strokes. It is like nothing I have ever seen before. Fill in with your matching color, applying the color on top of your brow hairs. Brush through the hairs again to blend. To keep the chiseled shape sharp, you just twist the cap counterclockwise to reveal the sharpener.

The Sculptor ($42) is available in four shades (darkest to lightest): EspressoChestnutTaupeBlonde.
