Master Class With Trish McEvoy

Trish McEvoy teaches a master class at Neiman Marcus.
Commanding a classroom of students is nothing new to Trish McEvoy. The beautician behind a self-titled makeup line, NYC Skin Care Center and best-selling book, is dedicated to teaching her philosophy of the “Power of Makeup.” Last Thursday McEvoy and her team of national makeup artists flew to Dallas to teach a makeup master class to three eager-to-learn groups of 40 women at NM Dallas-NorthPark.
McEvoy kicked-off her curriculum with an open ended question. “How many of you look at others and say, how does she do it?” Her method of addressing everyday beauty insecurities leads to empowering women with the tools, tips and tricks to master makeup.
Exfoliate
McEvoy, who is married to a dermatologist, says “beautiful makeup begins with beautiful skin.” She begins her lecture by stressing the importance of “washing properly, rinsing thoroughly and exfoliating.”
“No matter what your age is or what your situation is, exfoliation is a must,” she says, recommending her Beta Hydroxy Pads.
McEvoy jokes that those who are prone to breakouts are spending too much time in what she has nicknamed the “spa in your bathroom.” She says that “the key to not breaking out is washing your face, using the beta pads and turning off the light! Put a candle on as you do everything else. What you can’t see, you don’t touch, and what you don’t touch goes away.”
Hydrate
McEvoy leads again with a question, “How many of you don’t like the feeling of too much moisture?” She admits that she falls into this category. Then there is the other group. “How many of you love that feeling of moisture?”
The remedy for those who want to feel perfectly moisturized: Beauty Booster Eye serum, Beauty Booster Serum and Beauty Booster Cream.
Eyes
After the skin prep, McEvoy recommends moving onto eyes verses foundation.”It gives you more time to do your makeup because you have less clean-up,” she says.
Before applying eyeliner, shadow or mascara, she preps the eye with her eye base essentials, a waterproof shadow base. For those with dry eye lids she recommends using the Beauty Booster first. Then McEvoy encourages you to curl your eye lashes.
“It’s a step that you definitely want to try, it makes all the difference in the world,” she says, holding up her eye lash curler. “The reason I speak so often about lashes is because if your lashes are long, if your lashes are full, if your lashes are close together, your eyes look bigger. On the other hand, if it [the curler] just freaks you out, forget about it!”
The next step is lining the lashes with Intense Gel Liner, a gel eyeliner in pencil form. Instead of applying liner above the lashes, McEvoy instructs to “lift up your eye lash and in between each lash, connect the dots.”
McEvoy’s magic wand is her Instant Eye Lift. “When you are applying concealer, always apply your brightening products first, because what you will find is that you may not even need concealer,” she says of the step she calls the “triangle of light.”
Face
When it comes to concealer she says the secret to covering blemishes is the brush. “All you have to do is place the concealer right on the spot with your Laydown Brush,” she explains.
“You never want your foundation to look like foundation, you want people to think, ‘Her makeup looks so good; has she had something done?’” She laughs, recommending that older women choose a shade darker in foundation, and younger women match their neck and all skin types finish with a sweep of finishing powder.
Bronzer/Blush
McEvoy says to apply blush to the high apple and never go past the brow.
She advises to always bring bring bronzer down the neck.
Brows
“Brows can change your look as much as eyeliner can change your look,” McEvoy says.
To elongate and thicken the brow McEvoy uses her Precision Brow Sculptor. She says the brow should start from the edge of the nose straight up and should end at the outer edge of the nose. ”Fill in like you are drawing little hairs,” she says.
Lips
Like your skin and eyes, your lips have to be prepped for color. If you have dry lips McEvoy says to “take a toothbrush and place your lip conditioner on the brush and scrub!” Then prep your lips with foundation.
For a fuller lip, McEvoy recommends lining just the center of the lip using the side of the pencil, not the tip.
