After a successful partnership with Jeff Koons last year, Kiehl’s has once again commissioned a prominent contemporary artist for a cause.  This season New York-based pop artist Kenny Scharf brings his cartoony grafitti to Kiehl’s Crème de Corps.

Although Scharf’s works can be seen in renowned museums and galleries around the world, he is known for bringing his colorful creations elsewhere for appreciation. His talent has been on display in the streets, animated on TV programs like The Simpsons, and even on Lance Armstrong’s bicycle in the Tour de France. Now for a limited time, you’ll find a little piece by Kenny Scharf at Neiman Marcus, a dual-purpose piece that serves as art and softens skin.

100% of profits from the Kiehl’s and Kenny Scharf collaboration will be donated to children’s charities around the world.

In Detail: AERIN Holiday Palette

AERIN Beauty Holiday Palette.

Estee Lauder heir Aerin Lauder debuted her own eponymous label AERIN earlier this year. “I joke that I’ve been in the industry for 42 years, when really it’s been 20. Nonetheless, it’s been many years,” says Lauder.  The AERIN collection is a response to people asking what beauty products Lauder uses. The collection evolves this season with a new holiday color palette, (in stores and online now) which includes six complementary eye shadow shades that make an “evening in or out” effortless and chic.

“Holiday is a bit more glamorous,” says Lauder. The eye shadow palette has a highlighter in it, which can be used on your cheek and brow bones. It also allows this idea of a metallic, iridescent or smoky eye come to life. The lipsticks are full sized but housed in small cases that fit into an evening bag. “It’s handbag chic, minaudiere chic,” says Lauder.

According to Lauder, “beauty is very personal and it’s what makes you feel complete.” The beauty collection is inspired by a few of Lauder’s favorite things – “friends, flowers and fabrics.” The compacts are packaged in a gold linen, the colors are mostly inspired by nature (whether plants, trees or flowers) and the entire collection has been vetted through her friends.  “My friends and I often discuss that we’re juggling so much, rarely have time for ourselves and we ask ourselves how do you make life easier?”  This beauty collection is really mistake-proof and effortless. The products reflect moments where life is peaceful or fun.  One of the lip shades is a creamy natural beige color, called ‘Sunday Morning.’  “This is such a moment, you wake up, read the paper, drink coffee and decide what to do for the day. It’s a moment of peacefulness, it’s a moment that I love,” says Lauder.

When asked what her personal beauty philosophy is she says, “just because something is on trend doesn’t mean you have to wear it. You can enjoy it, you can see it, you can look at it in magazines but just because it’s of the moment doesn’t mean you need to embrace colored nail polish or lipstick. You should always feel comfortable with what you are wearing.”

Shop AERIN online at NeimanMarcus.com or Neiman Marcus stores.

Conversation With: Bobbi Brown

Bobbi Brown

Bobbi Brown

Despite being the name behind an international cosmetic line, Bobbi Brown‘s mantra is more about inner beauty than covering up what’s on the outside. This focus on the make-up of your personality rather than looking perfect is what Brown’s newest book Pretty Powerful is all about. In her inspiring eighth tome she interviews dozens of real women, celebrities and athletes about what beauty means to them. The result—a manual that is filled with pretty and powerful images, tales and tutorials. NMdaily spoke with the cosmetic guru last week at NM Dallas-NorthPark when she stopped in to sign copies and greet hundreds of product loyalists.

NMdaily: When did you realize that beauty products could be about embracing your features and inner beauty?

Bobbi Brown: I realized years ago that I couldn’t compete with models, actresses or the near-perfect photos in the magazines.  But I did put all I learned together to make myself feel and look better by using makeup that enhanced what I already had.  Don’t compare yourself to images of youthful perfection – celebrate what you have instead.

NMdaily: You compiled a very diverse group of women for your new book. How did you decide whom to feature?

Bobbi Brown: All of the women in the book have inspired me in their own special way. They come from all different backgrounds, are uniquely beautiful and have motivating life stories that are truly empowering.

How It’s Made: La Mer Miracle Broth

Vancouver Island

The beauty-savvy know that when the La Mer team calls with “big news,” you should come right away. So we headed to Vancouver, BC to get the first look at their newest launch, The Moisturizing Soft Cream, and see firsthand where they harvest the sea kelp used in the Miracle Broth, the signature formula used in all Crème de la Mer products.

La Mer Moisturizing Soft Cream

La Mer Moisturizing Soft Cream

Moisturizing Soft Cream or Creme Soyeuse is La Mer’s fifth formulation of its legendary Crème de la Mer. Like the original, Soft Cream contains the powerful Miracle Broth and Lime Tea Extracts that leave skin feeling healthier, firmer, smoother, and more hydrated. The difference is in its texture.

“The goal was to make something that felt really rich on the skin, and yet was weightless,” explains VP of Research and Development Andy Bevacqua. The brains behind La Mer’s beauty, Bevacqua utilized advanced absorption technologies to ensure the new cream is not only light and luxurious, but effectively delivers the Miracle Broth’s nutrients and antioxidants. How does it work? Skin-mimicking lipids are layered between hydrating emollients to create multilayered spheres that can be easily absorbed by your skin. (Simple, right?)

What’s Inside: Beauty Buyer Summer’s Makeup Bag

Before beauty products make it on the pages of NeimanMarcus.com, the beauty buying team scouts, sees, sniffs and samples every product on the market. We stopped by NM assistant beauty buyer Summer Larson’s very pink office at NeimanMarcus.com HQ, where she had just finished up a morning mani – testing a brand new gel nail kit deskside. Completely work-related, of course! She then unzipped her Prada cosmetic case.

How It’s Made: Xen-Tan

Before and after applying Xen-Tan.

Two women started out with the same skin tone. The one above applied Xen-Tan.

Fifteen years ago Dera Enochson was working behind a cosmetic counter at NM; and today her sunless tanning line Xen-Tan is on the shelves.

“Bobbi Brown came along and revolutionized the whole thing,” says Enochson, who spent the nineties working as a makeup artist for labels like Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Trish McEvoy and Estee Lauder. “Foundation went from that pink-grey shade to all of a sudden being brown-based. Warm undertones look more realistic and natural.”

Kale Naturals Brings Botanicals to Men’s Grooming

Kale Naturals

We’ve been intrigued lately by plant-derived beauty products such as Tata Harper, Sulwhasoo and VenEffect. Now we have Kale Naturals, one of the first all-natural luxury skincare lines specifically formulated for men. The multi-functional high quality line was conceived two years ago by Dallas-based mothers, wives and professionals Dana Kale and Tia Pettijohn. “Our husbands are busy professionals with stressful jobs. On the weekends they are taking their sons to hockey, baseball or lacrosse. They don’t want a million products with a million steps. They were our inspiration for today’s man,” says Kale.
