On Set: Burberry Kids

“Kids are a blast to work with! We look for lots of personality and the ability to take direction well. With the little 6-month-olds it is tougher, but they did great in this Burberry shoot. We try to schedule them first thing in the morning so they have lots of energy. We also try to funnel any photo direction through one person (either the photographer or the on set stylist) to avoid things getting too overwhelming or confusing for the little ones.”  —Kathy Cunningham, Art Director

On Set: NYC Outtakes Edition

The business of taking beautiful pictures is not an easy one. Unforeseen weather conditions, model mishaps, wardrobe malfunctions, tech troubles and misadventures with makeup can turn any good image bad. NM’s seasoned stylists, creative directors, hair and makeup teams, photographers and models avoid aesthetic accidents for living. Still, when you shoot in a busy public location, pedestrians inevitably intervene with perfectly positioned pictures.  Art director Robbin Solis shares some (comical) outtakes from a recent Cusp by NM shoot in New York.

A Visual History of The Art of Fashion

When the world’s top photographers intersect with high fashion (and the occasional celebrity model), the Art of Fashion happens. Richard Avedon was tapped to create the first Art of Fashion campaign in 1994. This slideshow describes some of what followed. You can find the complete timeline and an NM creative director’s first-person account of working with the great Lillian Bassman in the September issue of The Book.

The Art of Fashion: Mood Films by Erik Madigan Heck

Photographer Erik Madigan Heck’s saturated and seemingly brushstroked shots blur the lines between photography, fashion and painting. This surrealist specialization extends to another medium of creativity for the artist, film. As a supplement to the captivating Fall 2012 Art of Fashion campaign in the September issue of The Book, NM commissioned three art films from the youngest artist ever to shoot for the storied spread.

Video: Holiday Press Preview With Target

Last week national magazine editors had the privilege of being first to preview the mother of all design collaborations, the #Holiday24 collection from Neiman Marcus, Target and 24 CFDA designers. After braving a bizarre NYC hailstorm, they were astonished at the breadth and desirability of the products. It’s a cliche to say there’s something for everyone, but the collection really does offer something unexpected for everyone on your holiday checklist. Don’t just take my word for it; see what some of the editors had to say. Thanks to our friends at Target’s blog aBullsEyeView for the video.

Out of Office: Martine Assouline in Turkey

Out of office: Martine Assouline in Turkey

"One of the extraordinary mosques in Istanbul. The best way to understand this city is to ride by boat after a delicious Turkish coffee. Great moment."

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – St. Augustine

Assouline, the New York-based publishing company, has been capturing the spirit of its subjects for over 20 years. Husband and wife Prosper and Martine Assouline specialize in beautifully illustrated luxury books covering art, fashion and lifestyles. A recent trip and expansion into Turkey has prompted the publishing of two books– The Grand Bazaar and Light of Istanbul.

The atmosphere of the Grand Bazaar.

“My first day at the Bazaar was like discovering ‘Ali Baba’s treasures’,” says Martine.  This experience, thanks to our partner, Irem Kinay, inspired a beautifully illustrated tome displaying an overview of the history and legacy of luxury art crafts in Turkey.  Interior designer Serdar Gulgun, art expert Ottoman, and esteemed photographer Laziz Hamani reveal the vibrant spirit of the Grand Bazaar through stories presented in this volume.

In Light of Istanbul photographer Jean-Michel Berts turns his masterful eye to this enchanting city, capturing iconic masterpieces of architecture mixed with hidden places in the “mysterious enchanting moment just before the first second of dawn…you get the keys of the city to discover it when everybody is still asleep,” says Martine.

Shoe Shopping With Author Rachelle Bergstein

Christian Louboutin

Christian Louboutin Very Prive Python Pump

Women seem to shop for shoes in one of two mindsets – one, they need to find a shoe to fill a void in their closet. Or, two, they have the means to buy shoes purely to make a statement or in appreciation of the beauty of the shoe. I realized this during my shopping date with author Rachelle Bergstein, who has just published her first book, “Women from the Ankle Down:  The Story of Shoes and How They Define Us.”  It is a fun and witty look at the way women’s shoes have evolved throughout the twentieth century.  Even more fascinating is how the evolution of the shoe mimics the change in women’s roles throughout history—the growth of women’s self-confidence.  Shopping with Rachelle, who spent four years researching the history of women’s shoes, was not only fun but also quite educational.

In her day-to-day life, Rachelle is a city girl who is always seeking the perfect balance between fashion and function.  She prefers wedges or flats due to her lifestyle, but appreciates a beautiful heel as well… preferably a platform.  And with her fashion sense shaped during the Grunge era of the Nineties, Rachelle favors edgier shoes that mix both masculine and feminine elements. So it is no surprise that Rachelle was immediately drawn to the Jimmy Choo studded smoking loafers.  She loves the style, and the studding keeps them edgy, but above all else they offer the “perfect mix of comfort and style.”  With a guilty look she admits, “I don’t wear flats as often as I probably should.”

Photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank’s debut book, American Beauty, is her vision of modern American beauty and style.  The book, published by Assouline, is a portfolio of stunning portraiture that celebrates America’s new creative guard.

“I am wildly proud of the book.  It was birthed from a dream and to see it actualized is still a trip; I’m still pinching myself,” says Swanson Frank.

Swanson Frank’s photography not only captures women in their greatest beauty, it also highlights the beauty of America’s landscape.  Swanson Frank’s self-portrait (pictured above) was taken on Hennessey Lake in Napa Valley, California. Swanson Frank grew up in San Francisco and has a house in Napa Valley where her family owns and operates Swanson Vineyards.

“Napa is one of the most beautiful locations in the world, surrounded by mountains and endless vineyards with some of the best restaurants and wineries in the world.  You can go for a hike or get a facial, it’s the most amazing mix of beauty and culture,” says Swanson Frank.

Behind The Book: Neon Butterflies by Bill Concannon

neon

In 1898 two British chemists discovered a rare gaseous element that glows when “excited electrically.” They dubbed it “neon” from Greek, meaning “new one.”

Fast forward to the 1970s, when Bay Area–based artist Bill Concannon started working with neon as his medium. He founded Aargon-Neon, a shop that produces commercial signage, in addition to teaching the craft of neon-bending in an art context.
