Out of Office: Barcelona

whitney mayfield

Whitney Mayfield, NM site manager for jewelry, in Barcelona, with the Mediterranean on the horizon.

I went to Barcelona with my mother for her “big” birthday. We soaked up the sun, midday siestas and 10 pm dinners!

TO EAT:  Even if you show up at 9 pm the restaurants are virtually empty. Tapas restaurants abound; it’s just a matter of finding a favorite. There are a lot of lounges off of La Rambla – a centrally located street featuring many kiosks and street performers. I did some extensive tapas research before I left home, and polled our hotel staff. There was an amazing restaurant right down the street from our hotel. I developed a habit of shoestring potatoes with hot sauce and an egg over-easy. (Good for soaking up the sangria.)

Bar snacks

Sangria and olives are a must.

For a quick empanada or to pick up tonight’s dinner locals and tourists alike venture to Mercat  de la Boqueria. A massive indoor food market where you can buy anything — fresh fish, candy, empanadas, fruit smoothies…

Seeing Things: Man Ray Lee Miller

One of the most thrilling ways to understand Art is to recognize the ways in which it is generated out of the experience of daily life.  While some artists rely on theory as the fuel for their visual expression, others are inspired by the thoughts, feelings and perceptions born from the everyday. The exhibition at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor, Man Ray Lee Miller, tracks the creative relationship between two pioneering Surrealist artists. As lovers and later as friends, the relationship inspired their work and helped shape the history of modern art.

The heart of the exhibition lies in the years between 1929-1932 when the artists lived together in Paris.  Prior to this time, Lee Miller had been a successful model in New York.  She was beautiful, talented, and intellectually aware.  Man Ray was already a formidable force in the Surrealist world, combining painting, sculpture and photography.

EJ Viso’s Guide to Packing Light and Fast

Earlier this year we road tested Spring men’s wear in Miami with IndyCar driver EJ Viso, but he’s a very busy man these days, with the IndyCar racing circuit nearing its season’s end. This weekend he competes in the Go Pro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma. Next it’s on to Baltimore, then back to California. And not only does EJ race, but he manages other drivers. Busy! So when our friends at Tumi started shooting their Case Studies, a look at the packing habits of stylish globetrotters, we put our favorite speedracer forward. We can all learn something about packing from a man who has this little time to fuss around.

Earlier this summer, we cheered EJ at the Texas Motor Speedway.

How It’s Made: L’École Van Cleef & Arpels

van cleef arpels

Working with uncut emeralds at L'Ecole Van Cleef & Arpels

Laughter and wax fly out from the worktop where Carole, an expert jeweler, is coaching a student attempting to carve a wax mold. Across the room, master setter Frederic guides another pupil as she manipulates a graver into metal. Meanwhile, jewelry teacher Victoire keeps a watchful eye as I tackle a gouache painting.

It’s just another school day at L’École Van Cleef & Arpels.

L'Ecole in session

Opened in February in the Hôtel d’Évreux, a palatial, eighteenth-century townhouse on the Place Vendôme, L’École Van Cleef & Arpels is the first school of its kind—open to everyone, professionals and amateurs alike, with a passion for jewelry. Seven modules (plans call for 25 within five years) of four hours each span the intellectual to the practical, from jewels in mythology to distinguishing flawed from flawless diamonds.

It’s a rare window into a historically secretive industry and its preciously guarded techniques.  Some things, including the surnames of our teachers, remain a secret.

Conversation With: David Yurman

David Yurman rides his horse Chicken Enchilada at a charity event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

David Yurman rides his horse Chicken Enchilada at an event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

David Yurman‘s passions span from craftsmanship to horsemanship. We joined up with the jewelry designer to talk about his horses Chicken Enchilada, Mr. Scooter and Commander, and his latest collection, exclusive to NM.

NM: Most people associate your name with jewelry, but you are also an avid horseman.

DY: Yes, around here, we refer to it as my alter-ego… I started riding when I was 9 years old. My father taught me; it was about spending time together. We’d ride every Sunday – out the door by 7:30 am, on the horses by 8:30 am. It was a special time and place.

NM: What is it about riding that you fell in love with?

DY: It’s about partnership. When I go through the gate on a horse, I enter their world, away from the constraints we live with – it always clears my head.

At Your Service: Betty Lidji

We’ve often tried to imagine life as a Neiman Marcus sales associate, and we finally did something about it. We shadowed Betty Lidgi, a top associate at the NM flagship in downdown Dallas, for a morning.

8:30 AM: Betty Lidji has yet to arrive, but her office is ready for business: Three rolling racks, two tall enough to accommodate gowns, one already hung with an array of Hanro tanks and Cosabella mesh tees. A vignette of fragrance samples and instant-tanning mousse. Candy jars loaded with the chocolates she picks up on visits to her native Paraguay. And then there’s the glossy Haynsworth portrait of Betty’s “children”: Master Sable and Madame Coco, chihuahuas.

8:50 AM: Lidji rounds the corner, a pint-sized blur of blond and black, the heels of her slingbacks soundless on the thick, cream-colored carpet. Her greeting comes with enthusiasm and an accent to rival Sofia Vergara: “Oh good morning! How are you? Can’t I get you cappuccino? We have a very busy day!”

9 AM: Lidji joins some 60 other downtown sales associates seated on folding chairs in the fine apparel department. The theme of today’s staff meeting is, as it is most mornings, service. “How many of you have upgraded your iPhone applications?” asks general manager Shelle Sills. The phones offer access to any Neiman Marcus item, anywhere. Lidji uses hers like a second assistant. (Her first assistant, Kelsey Smith, handles appointments, messages, deliveries and anything else that might come up.)

Pep-rally applause greets Sills’ announcement that the downtown store ranks first in the company in customer service. It’s the job of the department co-manager Mathew Simon to reveal the previous month’s top associate: A beaming Betty Lidji. The 16-year NM vet [March  25, 1996] also is first in sales “out of home base,” meaning she’s as likely to help you find a handbag, earrings, lipstick, or pair of shoes as a dress from her home department.

9:30 AM: Sales associates preview of the day’s Sofia Cashmere trunk show. Betty listens, legs and hands politely crossed.

10 AM: Somewhere, the great Oz flips a switch and music (Yael Naim’s Come Home) emanates from the sound system, signaling the store is open. Lidji beelines it for a nearby rack. Her only appointment this morning is with long-time client Tricia Besing, who’s being photographed the following week by a local magazine. Lidji is fast. And decisive. Dresses in ivory crepe and navy jersey make the cut. A black-and-white tweed is “not what Tricia would like.” A quick drop-off at her office/dressing room and Lidji heads one floor down to pull shoes and jewelry. Then she’ll swing up to Intimate Apparel for Spanx.

11:00 AM: “I love selling fashion, you know?” says Lidji. Indeed. Her room now resembles a small but well-edited boutique. Half a dozen pairs of size 8 shoes rest atop their pale blue boxes. Sofas hold a selection of bags and a velvet-lined tray of jewelry.

Lidji dispatches Smith to alterations to retrieve pieces that have been shortened, lengthened, taken in, let out, and variously perfected for other Lidji customers by her favorite fitter, Silvia Rodela. One dress has been transformed from sleeveless to long sleeve. Who knew that was even possible? “We got fabric from the vendor,” explains Rodela with deserved pride. “Whatever pleases the customer.”

11:30 AM: Besing arrives, fresh from a workout. Lidji knows that she just returned from Europe—she saw the family photos on Facebook. Now more are shared via Besing’s iPhone. “Oh look at Ali, she’s growing up! She looks so pretty!” The women’s relationship stretches back ten years. Besing laughs recalling the time her husband accompanied her and fell asleep on the sofa in Lidji’s office.

Though Lidji works chiefly with 500 or so regular customers, she also loves being “on the floor.” She and Smith tag-team on the story of a woman and her daughter-in-law who recently visited from Norway. The women shopped all afternoon, returned the following day for lunch at The Zodiac, and the day after that to have their makeup done at the Le Métier de Beauté counter. All arranged by Lidji. Including “the most beautiful Alaïa dress to take home for the granddaughter back in Norway.”

12 Noon: Besing and Lidji land on a black silk Lanvin blouse and creamy ivory skirt with high side slits. (Rodela is summoned to make them more modest.)  While Lidji heads back out to find more shoes, the “young and fun and beautiful” jewelry she’s requested arrives. Besing hones in on a pair of Nicholas Varney coral earrings. The right one is “a little tight.” It’s marked to be adjusted before the photo shoot. The shoe department manager arrives with an armload of boxes. Besing slips on a pair of Guccis with slender straps and gold Art Deco trim. Another associate kneels to fasten the tiny buckles and Besing breaks into a wide smile. “Cinderella.”

Lollapalooza Style by The MidWasteland

The MidWasteland, Chicago’s own music and street-style blogger, shot the style scene around Lollapalooza over the weekend.

The Lollapalooza Music Festival took over Chicago’s Grant Park for a seventh time this year. The monstrous end-of-summer fest spans several miles in the middle of downtown and brings in thousands of people from around the world. A few of the fest’s most talked about acts this year included Florence and the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Black Keys. The beauty of this urban funfest is that the whole city of Chicago gets in on the action, so even those who couldn’t get their hands on a ticket could still experience music, celebs, and insanity. We hopped on all the gratis party action, happy to catch Of Monsters and Men, Delta Spirit, Polica, and Childish Gambino in more intimate settings. Our favorite landing spots of the weekend were The Rolling Stone party at Studio Paris, EnV Penthouse, and The Hard Rock Hotel. Oh and we can’t forget who we ran into while galavanting – Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Joe Mangienello (True Blood), Josh Henderson (Dallas), Kelly Osbourne, and Ivy Dickens (Gossip Girl). As for style, girls everywhere negotiated the heat in light layers and bold but casual accessories, especially sunglasses and the smoking slipper. Comfortable and put-together, it’s the perfect festival and Fall shoe. In all, a successful weekend! We’re already ready for 2013.
