Saguaro Hotel

Checking out Scottsdale's new hot spot.

From pink to yellow to neon green, the Saguaro Hotel matches the fashions seen on the Spring/Summer runways. Trend-inspired or simply a coincidence, the swanky spot in Scottsdale, Arizona has been vibrantly renovated in the beloved brights of the season. A pink pool complements yellow chaise lounges, and color blocked orange and red rooms bring runway looks to life.  An electrifying atmosphere matches the vivid tones. Guests put their best sandal forward, both poolside and at the property’s renowned restaurant Distrito.

Stylish Space: Victoria Christian’s Dressing Room

Victoria Christian

Christian sets a vase of lilies on her dressing table.

In 1999 Clive Christian took the reins of one of the oldest British Perfume Houses, The Crown Perfumery, first made famous 135 years ago when Queen Victoria honored the house by giving her crown as a symbol of British excellence.  Later that year, Christian’s daughter Victoria joined the company and launched the Clive Christian Perfume Collection. Today, the London-based father and daughter continue to ensure the highest quality by maintaining their original philosophy, “design first, then cost.”

Conversation With: Hervé van der Straeten

Herve van der Straeten

Parisian jewelry designer Hervé van der Straeten‘s sculptural designs and exacting perfectionism reflect his previous occupation as an engineer. Van der Straeten began designing jewelry while still an art student at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. He made a name for himself as early as 1985 with his jewelry collections, which were an immediate success.  Today, Van der Straeten’s designs include furniture, lighting and mirrors, which have all brought him international recognition.

“I try to make my work have a dialogue. Sometimes a material or shape of furniture allows me to create a jewel, and sometimes it is the opposite. There is no rule,” says Van der Straeten.

Elegance and minimalism are the key elements of his approach. Each collection is designed in his own bronze and cabinetmaking workshops and then presented in his gallery in the Marais, which opened in 1999. Van der Straeten is currently presenting his 9th exhibition, Dissonances, with a selection of furniture, mirrors, lamps and objects on display at his gallery until September 30, 2012.

New at NM: RLH Collection by Ralph Lauren

The RLH Hall bench. This Victorian-style bench in solid oak has a worn leather back and carved details.

The RLH Hall bench originates from a Victorian design. The solid oak piece features a worn leather back and carved details.

Ralph Lauren’s runway collections have a way of transporting you to a particular place in time. Spring took us back to America’s Jazz Age in the Roaring Twenties and Fall traveled a decade earlier to a Downton Abbey-inspired English countryside. Like Ralph Lauren ready-to-wear, Ralph Lauren Home takes that same historicist perspective to create intricate cinematic lifestyle collections that evoke an era in design.

Stylish Space: Gift Galleries Get a Rob Dailey Makeover

Rob Dailey

Rob Dailey stands in Gift Galleries at NM Downtown-Dallas.

For the flagship store’s seasonal Gift Galleries redo, NM Downtown general manager Shelle Sills tapped Dallas decorator Rob Dailey to create Spring’s Fantasy Pop-Up Home Shop.

“This was a fun and a really great project,” says Dailey, who typically works on restaurants and residences. “This was very different and out of the box for me.” Dailey’s inspiration for the room that typically houses stacks of Assouline coffee table books and John Derian desk accessories, was none other than the great Stanley Marcus. Dailey, like Marcus, is an admirer of modern art and decided to spotlight Texas artists with pieces like Alex Remington’s Mow.

An incomparable gift to the nation from the late Walter and Leonore Annenberg, the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands opened to the public this month.  Sunnylands is a 200-acre oasis in Rancho Mirage, CA, near Palm Springs. Originally built as the winter home for the Annenbergs, it will now function as a high-level, private retreat facility as well as a center for public visitation with an exhibition program, tours, café and bookshop.

Amos Kotomori’s World: Aloha Shirts to Balinese Retreats

The aloha shirt just turned 75, and it’s having a moment. Givenchy, Charlotte Olympia, Stella McCartney and Proenza Schouler have all designed recent collections with tropicalia and tiki culture in mind. Factor in George Clooney’s wardrobe in “The Descendants,” and the aloha shirt is riding a wave of attention.

Neiman Marcus Ala Moana celebrates the milestone by bringing a new level of sophistication and artistry to the aloha shirt through Honolulu designer Amos Kotomori.

Kotomori is an artist, designer and stylist who brings all his skills to his shirts. When creating the artful prints, he pays attention to scale, using smaller print proportions on the yoke and sleeve, progressing to larger versions at the hem. The shirts are hand made in Thailand of silks, linens and cottons that come from the same mills used by Hermes. Fourteen Thai tailors sew the shirts, paying acute attention to detail, fashioning French seams, meticulously engineered prints and an embroidered logo. Kotomori recently discovered a small stash of vintage fabrics in Bangkok, reminiscent of the rayons of the original aloha shirts of the 1930s. He created an extremely limited collection of shirts for Neiman Marcus Ala Moana from these finds.

In addition to his styling, art and design careers, three months ago Kotomori opened Villa Bodhi, a four-cottage bed and breakfast outside Ubud, Bali. (Yes, that’s the town where Elizabeth Gilbert found love in Eat Pray Love, but devotees won’t bring this up, as Ubud has drawn seekers and wanderers for decades.) Tucked up in the mountains, in Tiyingan Village, where just 60 families live, Villa Bodhi has provided a quiet retreat for writers, composers and yoga enthusiasts from France, Russia, Germany and Australia. Kotomori says Villa Bodhi is like an “artist’s showcase or living showroom. Anything you see there can be made for you by local artisans and sent to your home.”

What Your Closet Wants: Clos-ette Too

Looking for a unique present for the ultimate fashion enthusiast? Give the gift of an optimal closet — a beautifully organized space with room to spare for the season’s latest wide brim hat or exotic satchel. In 2002, Melanie Fascitelli started Clos-ette, a company that custom designs, organizes and merchandises the closet and wardrobe so it is wearable and cared for, while also beautifully displayed.  The three-step process includes everything from assessing specific shopping and dressing habits, to editing the wardrobe, to determining the space’s layout and aesthetic.  The end result offers the look and feel of a new wardrobe.

Want the look and feel of a new closet without custom designing a space?   Fascitelli recently designed a line of storage-solution products called Clos-ette Too, an array of stylish accessories and hardware to keep life organized and clutter-free. Delicate sweaters and jackets stay in place and breathe with luxurious flocked hangers — a Clos-ette signature. Sweaters stay fresh and stacked neatly with lavender-scented folding boards.   Shelf dividers highlight individual accessories, making it easy to shop your closet.
