Project Runway All Stars – Week 5, The Muse Episode

This recap of Project Runway All Stars contains spoilers! Stop reading if you don’t want to know who won or lost last night. To begin, the designers are lured to Central Park and issued a challenge to find a stranger to be their muse, convince that person to sell them a piece of clothing on the spot, and have enough money left over to buy fabric at Mood. Central Park seems hopeless, so the designers sprint downtown. Hilarity ensues as they shift into personality overdrive to charm the pants off of strangers. Of course, they find that guy who is all too eager to strip down to his briefs on the sidewalk. Good times. At the fabric store, designers pool their change to help Kara, who is a few bucks short. That’s sweet, but in the workshop, Kenley is TOO helpful. And too loud.

Hockey player Sean Avery rounds out the judges panel, and he has strong opinions. Isaac has the best one of the night: “No woman would want to show that much stomach on the street. I don’t care how far downtown she is.” Isaac also has a half-serious argument with Georgina about who loves jumpsuits more. It’s a draw.

Up until this week, all the losers have been women. But now the three ladies are called forward to the middle ground of safety. Another first—Mondo wins. His look is a symphony of colored and striped panels, worked into a complementary jacket and romper, plus uber-confident, cool-girl styling. Austin’s punk princess is runner up. Michael’s saggy, too-short onesie takes him to the brink of elimination. But Anthony fails to source at least 50% of his fabric from his muse, and barely referenced her. The judges are forced to disqualify him on those technicalities, apparently, since his turban/jumpsuit combo is hardly the tackiest or shoddiest look of the day. Backstage, everyone sobs except for Anthony, who assures us, “I have cute shoes. I’ll be fine.” Words to live by.
