Project Runway All Stars – Week 8, The UN Episode
This recap of Project Runway All Stars contains spoilers! Stop reading if you don’t want to know who won or lost last night. This week’s show opens with the final six designers standing under 193 stately international flags at United Nations headquarters. With only four challenges left, things are getting serious. “Just to see all of these flags flying you know this is a place of extreme importance,” Jerell says in awe. Like a world history professor, host Angela Linvall starts dishing facts about the UN. Are the designers about to solve world peace?
“For this challenge you’ll be designing beautiful dresses inspired by these flags,” Angela says looking up at the symbols of pride in the air. The six flags up for grabs: Chili, Greece, India, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, and Seychelles. Mondo won last week so he has first dibs and goes with Jamaica. Michael takes Greece since he is Greek (the flag everyone else was eyeing), Mila chooses Papua New Guinea saying “the colors are totally up my alley,” Jerell lands India, Austin says “I love tongue twisters so I’ll go with the Seychelles” and Kenley is left with Chile.
It’s off to Mood! “I do not envy Austin’s flag choice, that would be my worst nightmare,” Mila snips. Kenley, to much dismay picks polka dots again. “I have never seen a polka dot flag before, but I guess the state of Kenley Collins has polka dot flags,” Michael says. Back in the studio Mila goes modern with her design, Austin gets concerned about his flag’s primary color palette, and Mondo tries not to go too literal.
Joanna comes into the workroom for her weekly counseling sessions. The question of the hour: “How do you wear a bra with that?!” It’s down to the wire and the designers are rushing to complete their designs. “Michael’s gown is definitely starting to look pageanty,” Mila says. Austin is clearly offended by Jerell’s sari in the works,“I think the outfit is one of the most vulgar, tasteless and hideous things I have ever seen in my entire life,” he says.
Kenley’s polka dot party dress is not going over well with her competitors. “You cant just do a 1950s silhouette again and again,” Mila says. Mondo throw his hands up and says “Why is Kenley still here? Why is she still here?!”
To the runway! Designer Catherine Maladrino, famous for designing a collection inspired by American flags, is guest judge this week.
“It’s wiggley and wavy and I cant get past that,” Isaac says about Jerell’s rendition of the Indian flag.
“It’s screaming beauty pageant to me right now,” Georgina says about Michael’s dress that Kenley said earlier reminded her of Marchesa.
“It’s not the worst dress I have seen on Project Runway All Stars,” Angela says about Austin’s Seychellois ”sunburst of color.”
“I get communism from this dress,” Isaac says about Mila’s modern, asymmetrical look.
“The girl wearing this dress is embarrassed to wear her mother’s poncho,” Isaac says about Kenley’s ruffled and polka dot look inspired by the Chilean flag.
“We all agree who is going home, correct?” Angela presumes.
Michael is safe and gets to leave the runway. Now it’s Mondo vs. Kenley. Mondo’s chic black jersey gown wins. Kenley is safe, but the judges warn her that she needs to start stretching herself. Austin is safe. It’s between Jerell and Mila. “Jerell, it turned into a costume that borderlined cliché,” Angela says.”Mila, your dress was awkward to look at, and it could be awkward to wear,” Angela says. Mila is out.
