Men's
Father’s Day With Matthew Singer

NM men's fashion director Matthew Singer and Baby Eli.
NM’s sartorially smart men’s fashion director Matthew Singer is constantly on the road — attending fashion weeks, scouring showrooms and stopping by NM stores to style customers. We keep him busy, but off duty it’s all about spending time with the family. Below Matthew shares his plans for his first Father’s Day, laughs about stealing from his dad’s closet when he was kid, and also gives us a few dapper dad-approved gift ideas.
How does it feel to celebrate Father’s Day for the first time as a dad?
Matthew Singer: For my first Father’s Day I was traveling for market in Europe, but this year I will be home! I am on a plane that evening, but just having the morning with Eli is great!
Is your eye for fashion rubbing off yet on your little one?
MS: Not yet, but I’m sure we will have the same arguments my Dad and I had, about what is “cool”… Whether we come to an agreement or not I know (just as I eventually did) that he will appreciate the “wisdom” I bestow upon him.
Do you shop for him?
MS: I try to. My wife gets most of the credit for the purchases, but I help put the looks together. Very much like the buyer and fashion director dynamic.

Matthew and his father Lloyd Singer in 1991.
Did your father’s style influence you growing up?
MS: In EVERY way! Whether or not I understood it at the time, I definitely inherited the “taste” gene. He has a passion for vintage anything and loves a great pair of shoes! As a young man, I would sneak in his closet after he had left for work and pick a pair of shoes to wear. I always made sure to have them back in is closet before he walked in the door. There were some close calls!
What is you favorite sartorial memory of your dad?
MS: Shopping with my dad for my Bar Mitzvah suit. The way he showed me how to pair a shirt and tie together. My favorite accessory he gave me was a collar bar. All my friends thought it was weird, but I wish I still had it…
What makes a great Father’s Day gift?
MS: Something that I would never buy for myself. For example last year my wife bought me a handsome leather business card holder (that came in an orange box).
