Mister Mort Reports: Men’s Summer Style at Pitti Uomo

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair draws trendsetters from the world’s most influential stores and style publications to Florence. While they scout European tailoring and luxury sportswear, they also look to each other for style inspiration. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein a.k.a. Mister Mort was on the scene for NMdaily.

With temperatures reaching 96F, short-sleeve woven shirts were the best look, in solids and with prints. Intriguing, non-linear prints are everywhere, even on lightweight jackets. I’m glad the humidity is not as bad as NYC in summertime. Regardless, I find it very inspiring in that they still “dress” here no matter the weather. The guys still brought it—with navy blazers in double breasted and single, worn dressed up or casually with T-shirts and sleeves pushed up, and even one with a pajama style shirt! Very interesting to see all the non-trad ways to wear the classic. Lots of minty greens and teals, both in tops and bottoms and even shoes.

Vintage Pop: NM Men’s Buyers Salute Dad’s Style

Russ Patrick & John Patrick

Russ Patrick & John Patrick, Empire State Building, 1985

With Father’s Day just days away, we decided to ask NM’s dapper men’s wear buyers to tell us about their dads — the unforgettable father-son moments at the ballpark, dad’s invincible golf swing, words of wisdom, and questionable Seventies fashion fads that he managed to pull off… The consensus? Style is hereditary!

NMd: How did your father influence your personal style?

Russ Patrick, GMM of Men’s: My father’s career was in the wholesale apparel business. For many years he lived and worked in Southern California, leading sales for a popular surf-inspired brand. He always had a somewhat casual and rugged sensibility while still looking sharp. I have always favored a slightly more formal wardrobe. Perhaps it was the result of all those years in school uniforms and 22 years at Neiman Marcus!

Did he influence your career choice?

RP: Having grown up in the business all my life — I am sure that influenced my career choice, albeit on the retail side of the business.

Was there a fashion piece of advice he gave you that stuck?

RP: ALWAYS keep your shoes polished! I still polish mine myself.

What is your most cherished memory with your father?

RP: Spending time outdoors together is always at the top of the list. We spent many hours water-skiing, scuba diving, playing golf, and riding motorcycles. I received my first motorcycle on my 10th birthday. I do not know what my parents were thinking! We live in different states today, but when we get together it still revolves around outdoor activities. The only frustrating part is that he is still in such great shape, I cannot keep up with him.  And I am still unable to beat him in golf….

NM men's buyer Bruce Halus and his father.

Norm Halus and Bruce Halus, Santa Anita Racetrack, 1983.

How did your father influence your personal style?

Bruce Halus, VP of Men’s Clothing: His style was clean, professional and gentlemanly. He had a morning routine that I find myself following today. I feed the dogs, read the newspaper (although I am getting my news online) and have a light breakfast. When I get dressed I set my handkerchief, change, pen and money out the same way he does. And I never leave the house without telling my wife I love her — also learned from my Dad.

Matthew At Market: Men’s 2013 Pre-Collections, Milan

Hi all. I just wanted to share some initial notes on what is happening for men’s pre-collections here in Milan. There has been some consistency in color stories. Softer palettes of dusty pastels, pale pink, mint, dusty blues and periwinkle, along with yellow. Grounded in navy or naturals. Within some collections, fiery red has been the pop color.

Stay tuned for Spring 2013 collections! The curtain goes up with Pitti Uomo next month.

Conversation With: Brunello Cucinelli

Brunello Cucinelli

Brunello Cucinelli

Designer Brunello Cucinelli

Designer and “cashmere king” Brunello Cucinelli exudes effortless style, both personally and professionally.  His Italian heritage and joy of living, “gioia di vivere” as the Italians say, embodies the casual elegance evident in his designs. This season, simplicity is expressed through pure, soft flowing shapes and oversize knitwear.   Although his designs are inspired by expeditions of travelers past, Cucinelli himself isn’t much of an explorer.

“I am not one to fully indulge in vacations.  I am attached to my home, and I am blessed to live in a charming medieval village where nature is all around. I don’t need to go far to find peace and quiet in Umbria,” says Cucinelli.

Bowtie Guy Edward Armah Comes Full Circle

A fashion fairytale — from Neiman Marcus sales associate to designer, stocked by Neiman Marcus.

Edward Armah

Edward Armah

“It was me, my bow tie and my pocket handkerchief,” Edward Armah says reminiscing the days he worked on the floor at NM Short Hills, in New Jersey.

It was a decade ago and the sartorially savvy Ghana native had just moved from London to the United States. With dreams of breaking into the fashion industry, Armah landed a gig at NM selling shirts, ties and accessories.

“I was getting into a department with big sharks, guys that had worked there for 15 to 20 years,” Armah says of his days at the store. “Stepping into the department, I needed to distinguish myself from every other person.”

His colorful handmade bowties and pocket squares became his trademark.

New York Fashion Week – Men’s Style by Mister Mort

At New York Fashion Week I’ve seen double-breasted silhouettes in both blazers and overcoats, and peacoats are  increasingly popular. Blazers pass as outerwear in mixed weather, or layer under down coats when it’s colder. I’m also seeing some great color—in overcoats, chinos, corduroys—always a reminder that Spring isn’t far away, even on some frigid days. There are lots of bracelets around, and usually more than one.

Pitti Uomo Report: Bold Color

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair in Florence is an essential market for retailers of European tailoring and luxury sportswear. The semiannual installation, which wound down today, raised the curtain on the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. It was also ground zero for men from all over the world, of all ages, to display their sartorial savoir faire. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein was on the scene for NMdaily.

Not that Italians need a moderate winter as an excuse to wear color, but they’re having one. I saw bright blues, shades of pink and orange, and of course the signature red. With the spring-like temperatures, I saw quite a few accessories with pops of color as well. See you in Milan…

Pitti Uomo Report: Double Breasted Jackets

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair in Florence is an essential market for retailers of European tailoring and luxury sportswear. The semiannual installation, happening this week, raises the curtain on the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. It is also ground zero for men from all over the world, of all ages, to display their sartorial savoir faire. These guys know the rules well enough to break them, to outstanding effect. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein is on the scene for NMdaily.

The Double Breasted is standard dress code for Pitti Uomo, and this season was no different. They wore double breasted suits as well as blazers worn more casually, paired with khakis, cargos, (yellow) cords and white jeans. Winter whites work exceptionally well in Firenze.
