Pitti Uomo Report: Double Breasted Jackets

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair in Florence is an essential market for retailers of European tailoring and luxury sportswear. The semiannual installation, happening this week, raises the curtain on the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. It is also ground zero for men from all over the world, of all ages, to display their sartorial savoir faire. These guys know the rules well enough to break them, to outstanding effect. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein is on the scene for NMdaily.

The Double Breasted is standard dress code for Pitti Uomo, and this season was no different. They wore double breasted suits as well as blazers worn more casually, paired with khakis, cargos, (yellow) cords and white jeans. Winter whites work exceptionally well in Firenze.

Pitti Uomo Report: Dots

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair in Florence is an essential market for retailers of European tailoring and luxury sportswear. Today I saw lots of polka dots. Dotted scarves in cottons, silks & wools. In neckwear, I saw dots in both silk and knit. While we are talking about accessories, I also spotted (pardon the pun) pocket squares and socks and even a shirt. Whether you’re brave enough to wear a bold colored scarf or more of a traditional Churchill dot necktie, dots are classic!

Pitti Uomo Report: Bow Ties

The Pitti Uomo men’s wear fair in Florence is an essential market for retailers of European tailoring and luxury sportswear. The semiannual installation, happening this week, raises the curtain on the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. It is also ground zero for men from all over the world, of all ages, to display their sartorial savoir faire. These guys know the rules well enough to break them, to outstanding effect. Blogger/designer/trend-spotter Mordechai Rubinstein is on the scene for NMdaily.
Tuesday, Day 1. On this lovely first day of Pitti Uomo, as the sun was shining and heavy scarves were not needed, bow ties were plentiful and worn every way: in silk, cotton and velvet; worn casually with tweeds, denim, or nylon tech outerwear; or with suits.

Meet Matthew Singer, Our New Men’s Fashion Director!

Matthew Singer

Men's Fashion Director Matthew Singer

Matthew Singer, the new men’s fashion director of Neiman Marcus Group, started this week!

He’ll be providing trend direction to the company’s men’s wear buyers, spanning men’s wear markets including Designer, Sportswear, Tailored Clothing, Contemporary, Furnishings, Men’s Accessories and Men’s Shoes. He’ll be based in New York, where he already lives. And since we love a good baptism by fire, he is already off to Europe, to represent NM and sibling store Bergdorf Goodman at the Pitti Uomo fair in Florence and the Fall/Winter runway shows in Milan and Paris. He’s a seasoned retailer, so he’s already made this journey about a dozen times.

What’s your packing strategy for this two-week trip? Key items?

Organization is key.  I lay everything out, put a few outfits together, and fill in the blanks.  A key item for me is a navy sport coat. I can get a lot of mileage out of one jacket, changing it up with a pocket square or tie.

What are your expectations and hopes for the shows?

For me, the shows never get old!  It always feels like it’s my first time. The lights go out, the music starts, and out comes the fashion. I always hope to pick up on trends and get inspired. The shows haven’t let me down yet.

What’s your favorite leg of the trip?

I can’t pick a favorite. Each city gets me excited—Pitti in Florence, runway in Milan, and boutiques in Paris.

Buyer’s Buy: Bruce Halus, Men’s Clothing

Bruce Halus

Bruce wears one of his recent acquisitions, a Caruso made-to-measure double breasted, grey chalk stripe suit, on the Men's floor at Neiman Marcus in downtown Dallas. Worn with a Drakes of London tie and Ralph Lauren Purple Label pocket square.

As Vice President of Men’s Clothing for NM stores, you see every article of clothing in your market. What did you personally purchase for Fall/Winter?

Two Caruso made-to-measure suits: one double-breasted. grey chalk stripe in a seasonal English cloth, and one solid navy flannel with three open patch pockets and brown horn buttons.  Double breasted has always been a favorite of mine and having the navy suit made with the open patch pockets allows me to also wear it as a blazer. A great item for travelling. I also bought Incotex grey flannel trousers with a cargo pocket and lots of seasonal neckwear in solid flannels and cashmere.

Zegna’s Zero Weight Is Your Gain

Zegna

Zero Weight in Ermenegildo Zegna's Spring 2011 show

Often, when designers strive for “fabric innovation” the results can be unnatural and, well, sweaty. But not so with Ermenegildo Zegna, which has been improving and refining wool for over a century. Zegna’s new Zero Weight is an incredibly light construction for jackets and suits, tailored with Trofeo 600 fabric weighing only 145 grams per meter. For comparison, average spring/summer lightweight suits or sportcoats weigh in around 230 to 250 grams. Trofeo 600, a blend of Merino wool and ultra-fine silk, is closer to a shirt weight. Shop Ermenegildo Zegna.
