“Because of you I have a new ring today,” a woman, holding a small Neiman Marcus bag with newly purchased, sterling silver contents, says to jewelry designer Steven Lagos at NM Willowbend, outside Dallas. This Lagos loyalist is one of many who has been collecting the designer’s signature sterling silver caviar creations over the past 35 years. “The Caviar has been our signature for a long time, but like anything, we are constantly updating,” Lagos says of his coined technique that requires hundreds of steps to complete just one piece.

A Mother’s Day Salute to NM’s Mother-Daughter Duos

NM PR managers Meghan Mino and Terri Murphy-Mino

Walnut Creek PR manager Meghan Mino Murray and San Francisco PR manager Terri Murphy-Mino

How did you both end up working at Neiman Marcus?

Terri: In June of 2007, the PR manager from Beverly Hills said she was looking for a coordinator.  I called Meghan immediately and she interviewed the following month. But prior to that I would hire Meghan to help out during big events. When she was 12 I took her to a luncheon where we were providing a fashion presentation. There were three fashion college students with us to assist, but Meghan ended up styling all the models and the students did what they were told!

Meghan: Most recently, I have come full circle and have landed back home here in Walnut Creek.

How does your step mom/daughter inspire you?

Meghan: Without Terri, I would not be where I am today.  I have followed in her footsteps I am beyond thankful for her honesty, insight, support and encouragement to become a part of the NM team. I always idolized her. Her job seemed so glamorous!

Terri: Meghan loves what she does. She’s enthusiastic, inspired, willing to learn, a stickler for excellence.

What is your most cherished memory with her?

Meghan: Sitting cozy in bed, watching old movies, and flipping through fashion magazines. Fashion was a huge part of my life growing up and it was always a part of our time together.

Terri: We did this for years.

Do you have any special memories shopping together at NM?

Terri: We don’t get to shop much together but we do like many of the same things and end up wearing similar clothes without consulting each other.  Shopping for her wedding dress was very special though, and I was honored to be included that day.

Seeing Things: Frieze Art Fair New York

The contemporary art world was abuzz with anticipation for the inaugural Frieze Art Fair in New York on Randall’s Island, May 4-7. Founded by Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover, the publishers of Frieze Magazine, Frieze Art Fair in London has been a successful, cutting-edge franchise since 2003.  Their presence in New York tested the viability of another fair in the busy international art fair calendar. Despite the naysayers, it appears they hit a home run.

Frieze took some big gambles. Randall’s Island is a place most New Yorkers have never been and grumbled about having to visit. It is a strip of land in the East River, located between East Harlem, the South Bronx and Astoria, Queens. Served by ferry, bus and taxi, it turned out to be easily accessible and a delightful ambiance for the fair.  The ferry ride was a pleasure and worked to enhance the psychology of adventure consistent with the art experience.
