Model Citizen: Britt Maren

Britt Maren
Meet the girl with the platinum blonde hair and blue-eyed stare.  This fresh faced beauty is 21-year-old Britt Maren, the Houston, Texas bred model who made her runway debut opening Alexander Wang’s spring 2011 show in New York.  Since then she has walked for Marc Jacobs, Donna Karen, Rodarte, Michael Kors and Fendi. Upon arriving in Paris, Guido Palau cut off eight inches of her dirty blonde hair and dyed the rest platinum for the Balenciaga spring 2011 show.  Now, following two seasons of dominating the catwalk, the editorials continue to come in: a feature in American Vogue photographed by Mario Testino, W magazine’s newest issue photographed by Solve Sundsbo and working with Katie Grand for Love magazine.  We caught up with the model of the moment to talk Texas, travel and trends.

NM: Describe your ideal day in Houston.

BM: My ideal day in Houston would include spending time with my family and my best friends, who I miss dearly while in NYC. I would probably wear a summer dress since it is always so hot. I love the simple tank dresses, I have by Rag and Bone and T by Alexander Wang. They are easy to throw on, super comfortable, and yet still chic. The day would probably start at home for breakfast. I love home-cooked meals, and both my parents are great cooks. Then I’d go to a friends apartment, and hang there for a while catching up. I’d love to go to Goode Co. BBQ for lunch, because I always make sure to get some good barbeque when I’m home. In the afternoon, I’d like to go to a spa with friends for mani/pedis and massages. For dinner we definitely need to get good Mexican food and margaritas. Pico’s or El Tiempo are good choices. If it happens to be March, then we will definitely go to Rodeo Houston for all the fun at the carnival, livestock show, rodeo, and concert performances.

NM: Where are you traveling this summer?

BM: I just returned from an amazing vacation to Namotu Island, Fiji. It’s a really small island that you can walk around in about 5 minutes. The only people there are the people on your trip with you. It is so beautiful and relaxing. I went with my family and my boyfriend. We surfed, swam, fished and snorkeled! I’m hoping to go home to Texas in August too. I haven’t been since Christmas, and that is way too long for me!

NM: What are you currently reading, and what music are you listening to?

BM: I just finished reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett, which was so amazing. I’m now reading Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, which I am also really enjoying. I wanted to read both before seeing the movies. Lately I’ve been listening to some old music like Otis Redding and Al Green. It puts me in a good mood, and the songs are fun to sing to.

NM: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

BM: In my free time, I love baking. I have a big sweet tooth, so I like to whip up dessert recipes. My favorite thing is probably carrot cake, or anything chocolate.
