New at NM: Cynthia Steffe on Her Own With Cluny

Cluny by Cynthia Steffe black & white print skirt, white silk racerback tank and hand-knit cardigan on page 91 in the April edition of The Book.
Cynthia Steffe was a household name in the ’90s, but in 2006 the designer left her eponymous label that was launched in 1989. Cynthia Steffe, the brand, continued sans-Steffe and Steffe, the designer, is now focused on her latest venture, Cluny.
“I think the product is so unique and so special,” she says of the label named after a type of lace. “There is this visual signature to it as well. When people come into shop the line at stores they say ‘oh this is Cynthia’s line, no wonder I like it.’ It looks like me.” That design signature, Steffe says, is her attention to detail and selection of prints and cuts.
“The clothes are contemporary, but there is a feminine edge to it,” she says of the aesthetic that can be seen in pieces like her modern take on the crocheted dress and her bright striped peplum tops for Spring, her favorite collection to date.

“The Neiman Marcus April Book covers some of my favorites,” she says. ”I love the fretwork print scuba dress, it’s a great piece. I also love the fun cropped cardigans worn over full skirts. The oversized zebra print is modern and fun cut in a “bubble” shape. Each collection proves to be more exciting than the last. I’m having so much fun; the clothes keep getting better and better.”

Steffe stopped by NM Ala Moana on Saturday to meet and greet customers. Her last trip to our Honolulu, Hawaii store was six years ago when her daughter Ava was two.
“We have friends who live on Diamondhead Beach,” she says of the tropical trip that mixes work with pleasure. “We are fitting Neimans into our family vacation—why not!”
