Monica Dimperio

Monica Dimperio is the winner of the NM@SXSW contest! Monica is a Chicago-based writer and street style photographer who founded The MidWasteland, a blog documenting Chicago street style since 2007. The judges applaud her early devotion to the street style genre, her knowledge of music and fashion, and her sharply honed eye for original style. As our contest winner, Monica will come to Austin next month, reporting on the style scene at SXSW Music and its style branch, StyleX, for NMdaily.

Here’s a bit more about Monica, in her own words:

The late fashion designer Stephen Sprouse said, “I don’t know if it’s a movement, but the only thing new that’s happening is that music and fashion are all kind of thrown into one big ball and people see that all the time — you see a fusion of all those things.” In 2007, I started a street style blog after taking photos of interesting people at the Pitchfork Music Festival. And, like Sprouse, I quickly realized that only showcasing people on the streets was not exposing the full potential behind the looks. Image posts began to come accompanied by others about music and pop culture, the true inspiration behind outfit expression. Being culture-obsessed and working in this photography genre for five years, shooting SXSW and Style X will be a dream come true!
