Kay Unger

Meandering in Morocco.

Known for her designing dresses under her own label and also a contemporary collection, Phoebe couture, Kay Unger recently journeyed to Morocco. And she’s in good company, as Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Jean Paul Gaultier have all channeled the country on their runways recently. (Neiman Marcus also shot parts of The March Book there.) Unger traveled with her boyfriend David as they both share a passion for history and architecture. She found herself inspired by the rich color palette of the markets and the cultural lifestyle.

NM: Tell us a little bit about your recent trip to Morocco?

KU: It was a sensory overload of multi-cultural influences. Also, the past mixed with the present…The mix of centuries old with the latest couture.

NM: What is the trend you most dislike? And like?

KU: I dislike Goth and rock. I never was into the Nineties grunge look, I like a more feminine look. I most like the current trend toward exotic multi-cultural embellishment inspired by YSL.

NM: What’s your favorite part of the creative process?

KU: It all starts with color and I am inspired by it everyday, but also finding exquisite fabrics and draping them on the mannequin.

NM: If you were to die and come back as another fashion person or thing, what do you think it would be?

KU: The most exquisite pair of shoes. I collect and display them in my home as art.

NM: What’s your best styling advice?

KU: The opposite of Coco Chanel’s. Before you leave the house, always add one more accessory!

NM:  What’s your secret hideout in New York?

KU: The Crosby, but don’t tell, otherwise it won’t be a secret!

Kay Unger will appear at Neiman Marcus Willow Bend in Texas on March 3rd and 4th, 2011.
