DVF Diary
Diane von Furstenberg gives us a behind-the-scenes peek at the shoot of her Spring 2012 campaign and tells us, in her own words, the thinking behind the collection and the campaign:
I have always loved Spring because it is about freshness and starting over. With this collection, I wanted to really celebrate that, so we called it Beginnings, and designer Yvan Mispelaere and I set out to create a collection that was all about light and hope and optimism. You can see it on the runway, in the clothes themselves and in our ad campaign. The light was so amazing at our shoot, which was on a very windy day at Coyote Dry Lake outside of Los Angeles. We arrived very early to catch the dawn and it was a great adventure. I love photo shoots and that moment where you capture the essence of a collection. For me, it is always the coming together of two of my favorite things: fashion and nature. In the same way that a strong woman holds her own and stays true to herself in any environment, a beautiful design stands out against the most incredible back-drop nature can conjure.
So, for a wardrobe that can outshine the sun, here are my picks for Spring:
I’ll start with the Liluye One Shoulder Maxi dress because I love it so much that it is one of our main ad campaign images. I think the neon coral is stunning. I have always been inspired by antiquity and wanted to dress like a Greek goddess. This piece really does that for me. I would wear it with a gold, strappy sandal. It is effortless and elegant, and very DVF !
For something a little more playful, I love the Karin Dress in Light African Tulip. It is one of my favorite prints of the season and the silhouette is relaxed, but still feminine and flattering.
I also have to say, I love the Zia Suede Sandal. I am always wearing these and we have updated them with the season’s vibrant pastels that are just incredible. The Melon is my favorite and the crossfront really elongates the leg and makes them look fantastic!
Another look I love for Spring…the Landy Top in Meadow Stripe Red with the relaxed Athos pant. I think this print is beautiful and you can tell it is hand drawn. You see all of the love that our print designers put into things. It is so unique and fresh, and the silhouette itself is just easy. It’s perfect with the Athos pant, which is effortless and chic!
I also have to have my favorite scarf of the season and it is the Campbell in Shadow Dot Large Hot Coral. I am always traveling and on the go and I always have a scarf with me. If you are a little bit shy about color, it’s the perfect way to start incorporating something more bold so go for it!
For a Spring bag, I must say I am obsessed with the Harper Envelope clutch in Peacock. It is so chic and bright and really just gives an instant lift to any look.
I also love, love, love my Harper Connect…It allows me to take my iPad everywhere and still look chic ! I could never imagine traveling without it.

You can also see how we had our beautiful model, Daniela Mirzac, wear a mirror on her face to—literally–reflect the spirit of the campaign, which is ‘Be the woman you want to be!’
