Dominique Cohen has a reversed way of getting ready. The jewelry designer gets dressed in jewelry first, then she adds her outfit’s finishing touches with clothing.
“Jewelry is the wardrobe and clothing is the accessory,” Cohen says of her brand’s philosophy.
The routine makes sense, considering many invest more in a piece of jewelry than an article of clothing.
“We are very focused on curating our clients’ wardrobes of jewelry and helping them select pieces that are going to work back with what they already purchased and work forward for them,” she says.
"Today I'm wearing golden South Sea pearls on an 18-karat rose gold 42-inch chain," Cohen says. "Paired with a delicate pave chain with micro diamond round ring. This round ring of diamonds is completely hand made."
The curation begins with Cohen’s core collection, which consists of 3-1/2 foot chains that can be draped and doubled. Then, just like putting together a fashionable Fall outfit, getting dressed in Dominique Cohen demands layers – pile on a shorter pendant or a strand of South Sea pearls.
“You can wear a lot of Dominique Cohen and not have a very heavy look,” says Cohen, who began her career catering to celebrities at her appointment-only Los Angeles atelier. “You can make a big statement or maybe even put some pieces inside your shirt that you are sort of wearing just for you.”
One-of-a-kind fossilized ivory bracelet
However the notion of burying Cohen’s bespoke baubles is unfathomable. Pieces like a hand-painted opal butterfly, framed in rose gold and micro-diamonds, and a custom cut fossilized ivory bracelet with diamonds and 18-carat rose gold define one-of-a-kind.
“Now that the icebergs are melting in Alaska, they are digging up wooly mammoth and walrus tusks,” she says explaining how the brand sources the controversial material. “So when I say fossilized ivory, it’s not ivory that comes from an elephant’s tusk. It’s actually prehistoric ivory and some of it is over 200,000 years old.”
