Carmen Marc Valvo is synonymous with glamorous evening wear and red carpet gowns. He started his sportswear line twenty-two years ago. Today, he designs eight lines that range from Couture and bridal to eyewear and swimwear. As Valvo’s business continues to expand he see more lines in his future — shoes, handbags and maybe even perfume. His attention to detail and focus on fabric reflects his passionate, artistic nature. We caught up with the busy designer last week, when he took time out to debut his Spring 2012 Couture collection at NorthPark in Dallas.

Designer Naeem Khan swung into Neiman Marcus San Francisco to meet fans of his stunning, hand-worked eveningwear before heading to the Asian Art Museum, where his gowns were showcased in conjunction with a new exhibit on Maharaja’s jewels. Before it all, we spoke with the Indian-American designer about dressing the First Lady, taking up polo and, oddly enough, The Real Housewives of New York City.
NM: Did you ever think your collection would be paired with these historic jewels?
NK: Since I was a kid, this type of thing has always been my dream. I want to be known for taking something from the history of India—clothing made by hand and embellished by hand, and so many humans involved in working on each piece. Step by step, that is coming. But it’s taken me 30 years since I started working with Halston as a teenager to where I am today.
NM: Your business has grown since the recession.

Conversation With: David Meister

David Meister
David Meister started his career at Danskin, the body wear company, where he taught himself the magic of stretch in fabrication, and how it can be used to masterfully present the feminine form in a way that flatters curves and embodies glamour—a concept still very prevalent in his designs today. He launched his own label in 1998 with evening dresses, soon followed with day dresses. Many celebrities including Fergie, Tina Fey, Drew Barrymore, Diane Lane, Katherine Heigl, Queen Latifah, Felicity Huffman, Demi Lovato and Sharon Stone have come to him for his sophisticated, beautiful and body-conscious designs. He is involved in several causes, especially Dress For Success. Meister hails from Ohio and his good Midwestern traits—humble and hardworking—along with his energy and passion for glamour garner him many fans.

Dress Man: Don O’Neill of Theia

Don O'Neill
If you have bought an evening dresses at Neiman Marcus in the past couple of years, there’s a significant chance that Ireland-born Don O’Neill was the creative mind behind it. O’Neill trained alongside Christian Lacroix in the couture studio, before moving to New York. He was creative designer of Carmen Marc Valvo for 10 years, then went on to Badgley Mischka to launch their platinum label until two years ago, when he decided to launch his own collection, Theia. Named after the Greek goddess of sight and heavenly light, Theia has gained attention from celebrities including Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Emmy Rossum.
NM: What is your favorite trend right now?
DO: I love that the emergence of so many new, amazing, and wonderfully talented designers, with so many points of view, almost renders trends irrelevant. They provide freedom of expression so that people can be unique, wear what they love, and feel great about themselves.

Alexander McQueen, Fall 2011
A dramatic romp in winter white, with haute couture details and execution at every level. Over-the-top Elizabethan gowns in white and mauve… Porcelain mosaics as bustiers and as embellishment on shoes… Breast accentuation as a subversive counterpoint to the many lady looks… Equestrian/bondage elements… Sarah Burton is really taking the house forward.

Madame Gres was a reference in this collection although Claude Montana was in the air with asymmetrical lapels, portrait collars, and sharp shapes, often with buckle details.

Emilio Pucci, Fall 2011
Nods to the Van Trapp family, Heidi of the Alps and heavy Germanic notes were a surprise at Emilio Pucci under the design direction of Peter Dundas. Hems to the knee, and dirndles below the knee! This represents a shift in hemline direction at a house that embraces the micro mini.

Roksanda Illincic, Fall 2011, London
Glamour and comfort don’t always go together, but Roksanda Illincic is known for both. Michelle Obama wore a coat and beaded wool satin dress from Illincic’s Fall 2010 collection to meet the Chinese president Hu Jintao in January. Illincic’s Fall 2011 collection had her trademark, fluid evening dresses saturated with color like precious gems. But she also showed sportier pieces for day, and draped dresses that could take the cool girl from day to evening with effortless panache.
