Jean Mahie: For the Love of Gold
“Gold is a fabulous metal. For me it is a faithful friend. I understand it, I love it, and it gives me back all the love I put into working with it,” says goldsmith and jewelry designer Jacline Mazard.
Mazard began creating one-of-a-kind, 22-carat gold jewelry in 1970 with her father-in-law, Jean Mahie, in France. That same year Louis Arpel saw the Jean Mahie collection and convinced them to sell their products to Van Cleef and Arpels. A Neiman Marcus buyer spotted the pieces in their windows at Place Vendome and rue de la Paix in Paris. A year later, they began selling exclusively at Neiman Marcus stores. Although her father-in-law passed away, Mazard continues to create stunning, original handmade jewelry.
To celebrate the 40-year partnership, Jim Gold, President of Neiman Marcus Stores, hosted a cocktail reception for Ms. Mazard at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, in Dallas, where loyal customers and adoring fans could view the latest collection in an intimate setting.
Ms. Mazard’s love for gold is apparent in her jewelry, but she made light of the sentiment when she joked, “I wish I would have married Jim Gold, so my last name could have been Gold.” Mazard’s passion for gold continues to transcend generations, not only with her clientele, but also within her company. Today, both Mazaard’s son and daughter are involved in the family business.
