...and then, at NM!

...and then, at NM!

Elizabeth Showers—known for her striking jewelry, colorful gemstones and bubbly personality—gave me my first look into the world of design. I went to work for her in 2009 as a recent college graduate. It was here that I first valued the “lifecycle” each piece of her jewelry underwent. From inspiration boards to hand-sketched drawings to international trade shows, each piece carries a meaningful history with it. Elizabeth’s life has always been attached to her designs. I remember a custom monkey necklace she designed for herself…and the broken-tile-turned-necklace from the hospital where she was born.

After battling an eating disorder early on, Elizabeth found a sense of purpose. She strives to empower all women to feel good about themselves. She places a “Hope Star” symbol on almost all of her jewelry to serve as a reminder. Recently I caught up with my inspiring former boss…

NM: Elizabeth, when you’re not traveling the globe for work, what are your favorite vacation spots?

ES: I absolutely love adventures and exploring, so I am finally making sure to tack on some fun side trips to all my regular Asian travels now. I have taken a side trip on both of my Thailand work trips so far this year, to visit an inspiring place called the Elephant Rescue Park just north of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Its primary goal is to rescue abused and old elephants from tourist attractions, and love and care for them — and not to use them for riding, but just to feed, bathe and love them back to health.  I plan to take my 10-year-old niece to volunteer there together for a week in the next couple of years.

Conversation With: Hervé van der Straeten

Herve van der Straeten

Parisian jewelry designer Hervé van der Straeten‘s sculptural designs and exacting perfectionism reflect his previous occupation as an engineer. Van der Straeten began designing jewelry while still an art student at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. He made a name for himself as early as 1985 with his jewelry collections, which were an immediate success.  Today, Van der Straeten’s designs include furniture, lighting and mirrors, which have all brought him international recognition.

“I try to make my work have a dialogue. Sometimes a material or shape of furniture allows me to create a jewel, and sometimes it is the opposite. There is no rule,” says Van der Straeten.

Elegance and minimalism are the key elements of his approach. Each collection is designed in his own bronze and cabinetmaking workshops and then presented in his gallery in the Marais, which opened in 1999. Van der Straeten is currently presenting his 9th exhibition, Dissonances, with a selection of furniture, mirrors, lamps and objects on display at his gallery until September 30, 2012.

“Because of you I have a new ring today,” a woman, holding a small Neiman Marcus bag with newly purchased, sterling silver contents, says to jewelry designer Steven Lagos at NM Willowbend, outside Dallas. This Lagos loyalist is one of many who has been collecting the designer’s signature sterling silver caviar creations over the past 35 years. “The Caviar has been our signature for a long time, but like anything, we are constantly updating,” Lagos says of his coined technique that requires hundreds of steps to complete just one piece.

“My mom has always called this place the mothership. As a kid, the children’s department at the Fort Worth Neiman Marcus was magical.    My mom would let me pick out one of those Gund stuffed animal dogs    and I thought it was the greatest place on earth. Being here feels like home.” – Ashley Pittman
