Kareen’s New York Fashion Week Diary – Monday
Kareen Mallet, senior ready-to-wear director of Neiman Marcus, will share her perspective on each day of New York Fashion Week.

6:00 am: Good morning. It’s been a long weekend and I’m feeling it this morning. Waking up to Ken’s emails recapping yesterday’s collections. Today I’m wearing an organza bordeaux shirtdress by NAHM, a military-influenced black coat from Byrd and a structured Goyard tote.
7:30-8 am: At the office editing Sunday’s shows.
8-9 am: Writing appointment at the Rachel Zoe showroom with buyer Alison Day. We’re going over all the looks that went down the runway and interpreting Rachel’s vision for the season in our buy.

9-10 am: In Noho looking at Karl Lagerfeld and the contemporary collection Karl by Karl Lagerfeld. At 78 years old, Karl Lagerfeld decided to launch these two collections to leave a legacy.

Both collections are very iconic Karl—both very proper and tailored on one side, and a very rock n’ roll aspect on the other.

10:20 am: Back at the tent at Lincoln Center for the Carolina Herrera show. Renee Zellweger enters from backstage once everyone is seated. The music, “Lilies of the Valley,” is from the soundtrack of Wim Wenders’ movie Pina. (Everyone, download this music and watch this movie—it is exceptional.) Oscar de la Renta used the same soundtrack for his Resort show last June. Carolina opens with navy and black. So chic and luxe: pencil skirts, cropped jackets, fur, and gala gowns. The socialites (and Renee) all seated in the front row will find plenty to wear here.
10:50 am: Where in the world is Karlie Kloss? No sighting of her on the runway this season
11:10 am: Rachel Roy‘s presentation at Alice Tully Hall.

Rachel’s eye for color is always amazing. Rich hues of bordeaux, spice, blues and greens.

12:45 pm: Going uptown for the Theyskens’ Theory show, held at the Park Avenue Armory. While the vibe is still downtown (the leather jumpsuit is quite an item) there are plenty of dressed-up jackets (the slight peplum continues to be strong), billowy dresses, double faced coats, and luxurious haircalf outerwear.

2:30 pm: Donna Karan asks in her program “How do you define a woman?” Someone who carries the world on her shoulders. She’s never an either-or. She’s always and. Masculine and feminine. Powerful and vulnerable. Sexy and nurturing. Street and sleek. This collection honors her 2 sides.” There were plenty of men’s wear, strong shouldered jackets, and sheer mesh insets on dresses.

3:40 pm: In a Meatpacking District, smoke-filled warehouse for Phillip Lim. The 3.1 collection played with some trompe l’oeil details to create illusions.

5-6 pm: Alice + Olivia presentation and party. The collection is sexy and playful with a “coquette cool” vibe.

For Fall, Stacey Bendet is adding gowns in lace, sequins and brocades. I left as the party was starting to heat up to the sound of Bananarama tracks.

7 pm: Done for the day…see you all tomorrow for more coverage of Fall 2012!
