Kareen’s New York Fashion Week Diary – Thursday
Kareen Mallet, senior ready-to-wear director of Neiman Marcus, shares her perspective on each day of New York Fashion Week.
Today I’m wearing black lace skirt from Madison Marcus, white-black chiffon blouse from Valentino, white fox fur vest, Alexandre Birman boots, Goyard tote and Theory anorak.
7:45 am: At the office finishing up my trend presentation. Lots of good trends this week: lady polish with a vintage vibe, boy meets girl, and the athletica trend we saw for Spring still going strong (think baseball jacket and embellished sweatshirt), among others. Today is last day of New York Fashion Week. I only have two shows, but lots of market appointments.
8:15 am: At Diane von Furstenberg headquarters in the Meatpacking District.

Karen Katz, Jim Gold and the marchant teams are here for a corporate walk through. Diane comes down from her apartement to say hi. She looks glamourous even at 8 am. The collection that went down the runway is here and we can touch and feel the clothes. It looks even better the second time around!
9:40 am: At the Tory Burch showroom looking for styles to work into our trend stories.

11:20 am: In Tribecca at the Skylight Soho for the Ralph Lauren show. I always love this show.

The power row at Ralph Lauren: Jim Gold, Jonathan Joselove, Ken Downing, and Linda Fargo.

The venue is chic and the show is intimate, mostly retailers. Men’s wear-inspired suits opened the show, with high-glamour, beaded gold and black dresses at the end.

The Laurens en famille.

Ralph Lauren takes his bow to a standing ovation.
12:00 pm: In the car with Ken Downing and Jean Scheidnes. Jean tells me about her TV obsession – Downton Abbey. (Ralph used the theme song in his show.) Need to watch it. Ken is off to Dallas for the night and on a 6 am flight to London tomorrow. How does he do it?!
12:40 pm: At the Adrienne Landau presentation. I got my eyes on a two-tone rabbit bomber jacket with the matching hat.

1:25 pm: Quick stop at my favorite place by the office, Macaroon NYC, for a little feel-good treat.

1:45 pm: Stop by the office to catch up on a few things. In the past 5 hours my desk has piled up with requests for appointments from new collections. One collection sent me a box of mini cupcakes with their invitation—so sweet!

A cupcake invite.
3:38 pm: At the Calvin Klein show. There is a little drama at the entrance, where everyone is being asked to show a photo I.D. The collection by Francisco Costa is modern and feminine with pure silhouettes and a play on volume.

This was my last show of this busy fashion week.

Calvin Klein Collection finale.
All the NM execs are on their way back to Dallas, buyers will be here over the next 2-3 weeks to crunch orders. Everyone is tired and overworked, but it has been a very good week with plenty of trends and fashion that our customers will love. Covering New York Fashion Week is hard work, but someone has to do it ;-). I hope you enjoyed it. Off to my 4:00 market appointment at 3.1 Phillip Lim. A bientot, you all!
