Roopal’s New York Fashion Week Journal – Day 5

Wearing a Givenchy dress, Valentino shoes, Celine bag, and bracelets by Janis Savitt, Verdura and Kara Ross.
5:45 am: Wake up. My muscles are starting to feel worn after these last few days of running around! Reviews are out – femininity is in the air. Japanese tailoring. Birds. The yellow and green sparrow print at Carolina Herrera caught the New York Times’ eye too! I keep coming back to color blocking as I review images. It is already a trend for NM this Fall. It continues in accessories and shoes. I’m thinking of the amazing colorblocked handbags from Celine, Proenza Schouler, and Fendi that should be in our stores now.
6:50 am: Morning yoga for 30 minutes.
8:18 am: Head up to Lincoln Center for Tory Burch. She is having her first runway show after many presentations. Very excited. I remember when we saw the collections years ago in her living room! Amazing to see what a global brand she has become. She also happens to be one of the kindest and most sincere people I know.

Tory Burch, post-show
Fog horns and the sound of the ocean fill the air when we enter. She shows red and white print-on-print, fringe bags, pointy mid heels, some printed and demure. There are flat two-tone golf shoes, and jute espadrille bottoms. Handheld pouchette and clutch in suede. Layers of colored beaded necklaces. It’s a feminine lady – makes me think of a young Coco Chanel in Deauville, the French seashore.
10:19 am: Grab a coffee and regroup with NM’s Jonathon Joselove, SVP of ready-to-wear, accessories and shoes, Howard Feldman, VP DMM of handbags and Kel Rowe, our amazing buyer of handbags.
10:40 am: Run to the Empire Hotel to see a new shoe collection that accessory guru Filipa Fino sent my way.
11:00 am: Vera Wang show. Kim Kardashian causes a frenzy. I run into Rachel Roy who introduces me to Kim. She is even more gorgeous in person. She’s princess perfect in a one-shoulder teal gown.
11:31 am: And Beyonce walks in just before the show starts.
At first the lineup is all white. White tailored sleeveless pique vest, tailored separates, polka dot gauze eyelet, sheer layers of white, drawstring white skirt, drawstring vests. Then macaroon colors and psychedelic prints inspired from abstract 18th century wallpaper. Dreamy – a brilliant show for Vera Wang. Backstage Vera says, “It’s so me.” I could not agree more, cool and hip come to mind when I think of Vera.

12:04 pm: Rodarte. I always love to see what Kate and Laura are going to do next. Beautiful yellow Van Gogh sunflower printed dresses open the show. Mixed purple and teals. Beautiful fairytale gowns. It was a beautiful collection! An amazing and gorgeous show! Inspired by Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, I overheard Kate and Laura telling Suzy Menkes post-show.

6:20 pm: Zip down Fifth Avenue to Mr. de la Renta’s new space that is still under construction. Oscar is known for style, elegance, and grace. His love of color opened the show with a bright yellow and lace gown.

7:40 pm: Head to Narciso Rodriguez at Lincoln Center.
8:26 pm: Show time. Blocks of color – graphic and linear as his play on colorblock. Soft layers – pleats and folding with an origami feel to it.

Narciso Rodriguez, Spring 2012
Sculpted leather jackets over soft colorblocked separates. Vivid and bright color combinations – mints, oranges, reds all work back to whites and sand.
