Neiman Marcus senior stylist Emily Godbold shares her behind-the-scenes snapshots from a recent trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico to shoot a Neiman Marcus Essentials catalog that will be sent to homes in March.

Shelly Turner was the art director, Coliena Rentmeester was the photographer, and I was the on-set stylist. Shelly chose the location. Since color is such a big trend for Spring, she wanted to speak to that idea and go to a place that’s just saturated in color.

All the brightly colored walls, the bright green foliage and the beautiful blue skies and ocean were great inspiration for styling. I added bright pops of colors in shoes, bags and jewelry. Also, with the tropical climate I got to play with a lot of sunglasses, hats, silk scarves and natural fiber accessories.

Styling on location is always a challenge in and of itself. Compared to shooting in studio, there are so many more factors you have to deal with…wind, heat, turning an old prison cell into a makeshift dressing room (above.) You have to take it all in stride.

Shooting at Fort San Cristobal in San Juan. Gorgeous views!

The clothes always look so great on the models, many people always try to buy the looks and accessories straight off the shoot.

We work long hours on location, but did manage to squeeze in a few great dinners with amazing local Caribbean cuisine…lots of plantains, black beans and rice, fresh fish and perhaps a mojito or two.

I didn’t have time for a swim, but I managed to get in a walk on the beach.

Getting to experience a different culture, seeing a beautiful new island and getting to work with amazing models and crew.  I have to pinch myself.  I love my job!
